Pharaons Rally: sport and friendship

The atmosphere at the luxurious Hôtel Mövenpick, in Cairo, during the second day of technical checks was friendly and familiar. The guests weren’t surprised by the afternoon heat and happily took refuge in the pools and gardens of the hotel, while the Pharaons Rally participants took advantage of the magnificent atmosphere to recharge their “batteries.”

The mood amongst the organizers was cooperative and pleasant in the meeting hall, temporarily transformed into an administrative control center for the occasion. Every language is spoken here, and sporting advice is freely exchanged alongside friendly conversation, as everyone prepares for tomorrow race start in front of the Pyramids of Giza. On hand for the event will be the Egyptian Prime Minster, along with numerous other ministers. The authorities have taken a high interest in the event as it represents a truly unique showcase into local tourism.

The Pharaons Rally in Egypt is a race notable for its difficult terrain, the sand, the dunes, the navigation and the spirit of competition. Camelia Liparoti, a female Quad rider and loyal Pharaons competitor, can’t hide her enthusiasm for the event: “It’s my favorite rally on the calendar. I’m participating for the fifth time, and I’m as passionate as ever. It’s also the last event before the Dakar, and the Pharaons contains everything we need to be prepared next January…” It’s a logic that is backed by the high number of participants.

Moto: the absence of David Frétigné
The Yamaha of David Frétigné is stuck on the sidelines: the French rider is unable to compete in the Egyptian event. A crash on his bicycle and two broken ribs have robbed him of the satisfaction of racing in an event he has been planning for quite some time. Present, however, is Jordi Viladoms, currently second in the World Championship (led by Marc Coma, who has already clinched the title) on a KTM 450. There is also the entire Husqvarna Speedbrain Team, with Joan Barreda and Paulo Goncalves. Also on hand is the Orlen Team, represented by the trio of Jakub Przygonski, Marek Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor. Pal Ullevalseter has returned to the Pharaons after several years away. He won the race in 2004,and is looking to repeat that success this season.
Roughly sixty bikes will be present at the start, a group in which the Italians – including veteran Franco Picco – are the most numerous nationality.

Auto: A Al-Mutawei – Schlesser Matchup
While the competition will be wide open amongst the bikes, the four wheeled race is likely to come down a battle between Qatari driver Al-Mutawei and Frenchman Jean-Louis Schlesser.
The winner will take home sixty points, with just 9 points separating them in the FIA World Cup! That means that the championship fight is still very much up in the air.

Khalifa, in the Mini All4 Racing of Team X-Raid Rally, doesn’t seem nervous, but he openly recognizes Jean-Louis’ strength on this type of terrain. He warned: “Schlesser has won the last two editions of the race…” It’s a comment that belies the pressure on Schlesser, who has disregarded any predictions and plans to take things day by day.

The G-Force pairing of Boris Gadasin (winner of the Hungarian Baja and the Silk Way) and Vladimir Vasilyev could overturn all of the predictions. Let’s also not forget Hungarian driver Miroslav Zapletal, at the wheel of a strong BMW that should allow him to be a protagonist.
Looking on patiently will be Japanese competitor Jun Mitsuhashi (navigated by Frenchman Alain Guehennec) in a Toyota (T2), who regularly features at the top of the timesheets.

34 cars and one truck will breed life into this weeklong adventure in the Egyptian desert, where every competitor will be trying to distinguish themself for the two important races next year: the Dakar and the Sonangol Africa Race.

Dakar Challenge
This year the Dakar Challenge is reserved for cars, and includes all amateur competitors who have never raced in the Dakar previously, and who aren’t on the FIA priority list.
The winner of this particular sub-category has the chance to realize his or her dream: standing up on the starting podium in Lima, on January 5th, 2013, with their 2013 Dakar entry offered by ASO.

Pharaons Rally: sport e convivialità
Quello che regna nel lussuoso Hôtel Mövenpick al Cairo durante la seconda giornata delle verifiche tecniche è un ambiente allegro e familiare. Gli ospiti non sono davvero sorpresi dalla calura pomeridiana e si rinfrescano nelle numerose piscine e nei giardini verdeggianti dell’hotel, mentre i concorrenti del Pharaons Rally approfittano di questo magnifico ambiente per ricaricare le «batterie»

Sul fronte organizzativo l’ambiente è conviviale e sorridente nel Centro congressi, trasformato per l’occasione nella sede delle verifiche amministrative. Qui si parlano tutte le lingue, ci si scambiano pareri sportivi e commenti amichevoli prima del via che sarà dato domani davanti alle Piramidi di Giza in presenza del Primo Ministro egiziano e di numerosi altri Ministri. Tanto è infatti l’interesse delle autorità che vedono in questa prova Mondiale un’insostituibile vetrina verso il turismo.

Il Pharaons Rally in Egitto è una gara particolare per la difficoltà dei suoi terreni, la sabbia, le dune, la navigazione e lo spirito. Camelia Liparoti, la pilota di Quad fedelissima del Pharaons, non nasconde il suo entusiasmo per la prova: «E’ il mio rally preferito dell’intero calendario. Io partecipo per la quinta volta con la stessa passione di sempre. E’ inoltre l’ultimo incontro prima della Dakar. Il Pharaons comprende tutto quello che noi cerchiamo per essere pronti il prossimo gennaio..» Una logica che conferma il buon numero di concorrenti iscritti.

Moto: L’assenza di David Frétigné
La Yamaha di David Frétigné è rimasta nel parco assistenza: il pilota francese non ha potuto prendere parte alla competizione Egiziana. Una caduta in bicicletta e due costole rotte lo hanno privato del piacere di partecipare alla gara che aveva pianificato da tempo. Per contro Jordi Viladoms, attualmente secondo nel Campionato del Mondo (preceduto da Marc Coma già vincitore del titolo iridato) è presente con la sua KTM 450 come tutto il team Husqvarna Speedbrain con Joan Barreda e Paulo Goncalves. Allo stesso modo fedele è l’Orlen Team. La presenza del trio formato da Jakub Przygonski, Marek Dabrowski e Jacek Czachor lo conferma. Pal Ullevalseter torna al Pharaons dopo numerosi anni di assenza. Aveva vinto l’edizione 2004 ed è in cerca di un nuovo successo.
Una sessantina di due ruote saranno presenti alla partenza, un parterre nel quale gli italiani – tra cui l’inossidabile Franco Picco – risultano il gruppo più numeroso.

Auto: Match Al-Mutawei – Schlesser
Se per le moto la competizione sarà accesa, quella delle quattro ruote risulterà determinante tra il pilota del Quatar Al-Mutawei e il francese Jean-Louis Schlesser. All’arrivo saranno attribuiti sessanta punti al vincitore! Lo scarto che separa i due avversari in Coppa del Mondo FIA è ora di 9 punti! Nulla dunque è ancora stabilito per il mondiale.

Khalifa sulla Mini All4 Racing del team X-Raid Rally non si mostra nervoso ma conosce le qualità di Jean-Louis su questo genere di terreno. Mette in guardia: «Lui ha vinto le ultime due edizioni…». Un pensiero che tradisce la pressione messa da Schlesser che dal canto suo non fa alcun pronostico ma vivrà la gara giorno dopo giorno.

La G-Force con Boris Gadasin (vincitore della Baja in Ungheria e del Silk Way) e Vladimir Vasilyev potrebbero sovvertire i pronostici. Non dimentichiamo l’ungherese Miroslav Zapletal al volante di una veloce BMW che gli permetterà di giocare un ruolo di spicco nella gara.
A sorvegliare con pazienza c’è il Giapponese Jun Mitsuhashi (navigato dal francese Alain Guehennec) su una Toyota (T2) abituato alle zone alte della classifica.

34 vetture e un camion animeranno quindi questa settimana il deserto egiziano dove ciascuno cercherà di emergere prima delle due importanti competizioni del prossimo anno: la Dakar e il Sonangol Africa Race.

Dakar Challenge
Quest anno il Dakar Challenge è riservato alle auto e riguarda tutti i concorrenti amatori che non hanno mai partecipato alla Dakar o che non fanno parte della lista prioritaria della FIA.
Il vincitore di questa classifica particolare potrà realizzare il proprio sogno. Salire sul podio di partenza a Lima, il 5 gennaio 2013, con l’iscrizione alla Dakar 2013 offerta da ASO.

Rallye des Pharaons: C’est sympa, convivial et sportif!
C’est une ambiance joyeuse et même familiale qui règne dans le luxueux Hôtel Mövenpick au Caire à l’heure des vérifications d’usage. Personne n’est vraiment étonné de la chaleur ambiante qui plonge dans les nombreuses piscines et sur les jardins verdoyants du site, les concurrents de la édition 2012 du Rallye des Pharaons profite de ce cadre enchanteur pour recharger leurs batteries physiques!

Du côté de l’organisation tout est accueillant, convivial et sourire dans le Palais des congrès transformé pour la circonstance en bureau administratif. On y parle toutes les langues de la planète, on y échange des paroles sportives et amicales avant le coup d’envoi qui sera donné demain devant les Pyramides en présence de nombreux Ministres. C’est dire l’intérêt porté à cette épreuve mondiale par les dirigeants du pays qui voit en ce Championnat du Monde moto et Coupe du Monde auto, une incontournable vitrine vers le tourisme.

Le Rallye des Pharaons en Egypte est une manche spéciale par la rigueur de son terrain, son sable, ses dunes, sa navigation et son esprit. Camelia Liparoti, la pilote Quad, une fidèle, ne cache pas son enthousiasme pour cette épreuve convenant: «c’est mon rallye préféré dans le calendrier. J’y participe pour la 5ème fois avec la même passion. C’est aussi, le dernier rendez-vous avant le Dakar. Les Pharaons dégagent tout ce que nous recherchons pour être prêt en janvier prochain…» Une logique que confirme bon nombre de concurrents engagés.

Motos: Forfait de David Frétigné blessé!
La moto Yamaha de David Frétigné est restée bâchée dans le parc, le pilote français n’a pu rejoindre l’Egypte. Une chute de VTT le prive de cet entraînement prévu de longue date. Avec deux côtes cassées, il renonce à sa participation, le vague à l’âme certes tout en s’interrogeant sur l’accumulation de pépins qui l’accablent depuis deux saisons.
Par contre, Jordi Viladoms, actuellement deuxième du Championnat du Monde (après Marc Coma, assuré du titre) est bien présent avec sa KTM 450 (et non la TM1) tout comme le Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain avec Joan Barreda et Paulo Goncalves.
Fidèle également se montre le Orlen Team. La présence de la triplette Jakub Przygonski, Marek Dabrowski et Jacek Czachor le confirme.
Pal Ullevalseter revient aux Pharaons après de nombreuses années d’absence. Il avait remporté l’édition 2004 et vise un nouveau succès…
Une soixantaine de 2 roues seront au départ, un plateau dans lequel les italiens – dont l’inoxydable Franco Picco – se font la part belle!

Autos: Match Al-Mutawei – Schlesser
Si, à moto la course enchantera, celle des 4 roues sera essentielle entre le pilote du Qatar, Khalifa Al-Mutawei et le français, Jean-Louis Schlesser. A l’arrivée, ce sont 60 points qui seront attribués au vainqueur! Et l’écart qui sépare les deux adversaires en Coupe du Monde FIA est à ce jour de 8 points! Rien n’est donc joué pour le titre mondial.
Khalifa sur Mini All4 Racing du X-Raid Rally ne se montre pas inquiet mais, connaît les qualités de Jean-Louis sur ce genre de terrain. Il rappelle: «Il a remporté les deux dernière éditions…» Une réflexion qui montre la pression qui l’habite comparativement au ‘Schless’ qui, équipé de son Buggy utilisé à l’Africa Race 2012, ne fait aucun pronostic mais avisera au jour le jour!
Le G-Force avec Boris Gadasin (vainqueur de la Baja en Hongrie et du Silk Way) et Vladimir Vasilyev peuvent créer la surprise, les deux pilotes ont pris de l’assurance. Ne perdons pas de vue, le Hongrois Miroslav Zapletal qui mène un très rapide BMW lui permettant de jouer les premiers rôles.
A surveiller également le Japonais Jun Mitsuhashi (navigué par le français Alain Guehennec) sur Toyota (T2) dont la régularité le place annuellement au sommet de la hiérarchie.
Côté français, Patrick Sireyjol (Buggy SMG) et Régis Delahaye (Buggy MD Racing) seront également des ‘clients’ pour le podium final mais aussi de la catégorie 2 roues motrices comme leur chef de file, Jean-Louis Schlesser.
Une trentaine de voitures et un camion animeront cette semaine dans le désert égyptien où chacun aura à cœur de briller avant les deux rendez-vous importants de l’année prochaine: le Dakar et le Sonangol Africa Race.

Dakar Challenge
Cette année, le Dakar Challenge est réservé aux autos et concerne tous les concurrents amateurs qui n’ont jamais participé au Dakar ou qui ne font pas partis de la liste prioritaire de la FIA.
Le vainqueur de ce classement spécifique, pourra ainsi réaliser son rêve. L’engagement lui sera offert par ASO, il pourra ainsi, monter sur le podium de départ à Lima, le 5 janvier 2013!
