Suleiman Zanfari continued his return to kart racing at the second round of the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior at the Genk circuit from 16th to 19th May, 2019.
He was driving a Kosmic / Iame from the VDK Racing team for the occasion, facing over 75 experienced opponents. Unspared by the weather conditions in Timed Practice which was particularly difficult to manage, the young Moroccan driver then began an outstanding of 20 places and finished inside the top 10 in a superb 9th position.
Those who had known Suleiman in previous years were surprised by his progress since last year’s races. It is indeed a transformed driver who approaches the 2019 season and Suleiman displays a maturity and a quiet determination in all circumstances that allow him to use his talent perfectly.
The multiple World Champion Davide Foré who has coached him this season confirmed this positive impression: “He is a solid driver who had already shone at Kristianstad two weeks ago for his first race after seven months away from the circuits. Suleiman was very fast in the heats. He regained ground until the penultimate heat on Saturday afternoon without making mistakes and regularly posting excellent times less than a tenth from the fastest. His ability to handle races with intelligence really pleased me. No doubt, he is a young man who learns very quickly. I think his machine was slightly weaker on Sunday, otherwise I’m sure he would have been able to finish in the top five or even better.”
The meeting had not started under the best auspices as capricious weather disrupted Qualifying. The grip of the track varied over a few seconds with the effect of light intermittent rain. It was difficult under these conditions to set the kart up optimally and give the maximum without going off the track. With relative caution, Suleiman was 29th out of 76 in the overall standings of the three sessions.
This less advantageous situation than expected did not disturb the young Moroccan from the OCK club who approached the Qualifying Heats with calmness and determination. Much faster than in Free Practice, he was very steady with a very good dry speed, often coming in among the top five fastest, while passing several opponents in each race. In the last he was faced by drivers who chose to use their last set of new tyres early, but still managed to finish this important phase in 14th position with a substantial gain of 15 places since Qualifying.
Although starting the Final from the 7th row, in the middle of the pack, Suleiman avoided the start incidents and continued his climb without any haste, preparing his attacks carefully. He regained another six places to finally reach a flattering 9th position.
“I am very happy with my race,” said the young Moroccan hopeful, supported by Cool Performance. “I do my best on every occasion and it was very pleasant. I wish I could aim for an even more rewarding result, but I’m not complaining, it was a very good weekend. A big thank you to Eric and Alain Verdaasdonk of the VDK Racing team and a special dedication to Gabriele Bassetta, my faithful mechanic. I cannot wait to return to Sweden in less than two weeks to compete in the third round of the European Championship with greater ambitions.”
Positivo rientro nella top 10 europea in Belgio
Suleiman Zanfari ha proseguito la sua rimonta nelle gare di karting durante la seconda prova del Campionato europeo FIA Karting Junior sul circuito di Genk, dal 16 al 19 maggio 2019. Per l’occasione era al volante di un Kosmic/Iame del team VDK Racing, di fronte a più di 75 avversari superallenati. Poco favorito dalle condizioni meteo durante le prove cronometrate, particolarmente complesse da gestire, il giovane pilota marocchino si è lanciato in una rimonta da manuale di 20 posizioni e ha concluso tra i 10 più forti con un ottimo nono posto.
Chi aveva conosciuto Suleiman negli anni scorsi è rimasto sorpreso da quanto sia maturato rispetto alle corse dell’anno scorso. È infatti un pilota trasformato ad affrontare la stagione 2019. Suleiman dimostra in ogni circostanza maturità, determinazione e tranquillità, che gli consentono di mettere a frutto il suo talento in modo perfetto.
Il pluricampione del mondo Davide Foré che lo allena questa stagione conferma questa impressione positiva: “Ho ritrovato il pilota tenace che si era già distinto a Kristianstad, due settimane fa, nella sua prima corsa dopo sette mesi di lontananza dai circuiti. Suleiman è stato velocissimo nelle manche. Ha riguadagno terreno fino alla penultima manche, sabato pomeriggio, senza commettere errori e facendo segnare con regolarità tempi eccellenti, a meno di un decimo dai migliori. Mi è veramente piaciuta la sua capacità di gestire le corse con intelligenza. Indubbiamente si tratta di un ragazzo che impara molto in fretta. Credo che domenica il suo mezzo fosse un po’ meno performante, altrimenti sono sicuro che sarebbe riuscito a entrare tra i primi cinque o addirittura meglio”.
Il meeting, tuttavia, non è iniziato sotto i migliori auspici, con un meteo capriccioso che ha disturbato lo svolgimento delle prove di qualificazione. L’aderenza della pista, infatti, è variata di diversi secondi a causa di una pioggia fine intermittente. In queste condizioni è stato difficile prevedere la regolazione ideale del kart e dare il massimo senza uscire di pista. Con relativa prudenza, Suleiman si è ritrovato al 29° posto su 76 nella classifica cumulativa delle tre serie.
Questa situazione, meno vantaggiosa di quanto sperato, non ha però turbato il giovane marocchino del club OCK, che ha affrontato le manche di qualificazione con calma e determinazione. Molto più veloce rispetto alle prove libere, ha dato prova con grande regolarità di un’ottima velocità sull’asciutto, posizionandosi spesso tra i primi cinque più veloci e superando diversi avversari in ogni corsa. Nelle ultime due corse ha affrontato piloti che avevano scelto in anticipo di montare il loro ultimo treno di gomme nuove, ma è riuscito comunque a concludere questa fase importante al 14° posto, con una rimonta notevole di 15 posizioni dopo le prove cronometrate.
Nonostante la partenza in finale dalla settima fila, all’interno del gruppo, Suleiman ha evitato incidenti al via e ha proseguito la sua ascesa senza alcuna fretta, preparando attentamente gli attacchi. È riuscito a guadagnare altre sei posizioni ottenendo un lusinghiero nono posto.
“Sono molto contento della mia corsa”, ha confidato la giovane speranza marocchina supportata da Cool Performance. “Ho fatto il massimo in tutte le occasioni ed è stato molto bello. Avrei voluto ottenere un risultato ancora più gratificante, ma non posso lamentarmi, è stato un ottimo week-end. Rivolgo un sentito ringraziamento a Eric e Alain Verdaasdonk del team VDK Racing e una dedica speciale a Gabriele Bassetta, il mio fedele meccanico. Non vedo l’ora di tornare in Svezia tra meno di due settimane per disputare la terza prova del Campionato europeo, con obiettivi ancora più ambiziosi”.
Une entrée remarquée dans le top 10 européen en Belgique
Suleiman Zanfari poursuivait sa reprise en compétition karting lors de la 2e épreuve du Championnat d’Europe FIA Karting Junior sur le circuit de Genk du 16 au 19 mai 2019. Il pilotait pour l’occasion un Kosmic/Iame du team VDK Racing, face à plus de 75 adversaires surentraînés. Peu gâté par les conditions climatiques lors d’essais chronométrés particulièrement compliqués à gérer, le jeune pilote marocain entamait ensuite une remontée d’anthologie de 20 places et terminait parmi les 10 meilleurs à une superbe 9e position.
Ceux qui avaient connu Suleiman les années précédentes ont été surpris par son évolution depuis les courses de l’an dernier. C’est en effet un pilote transfiguré qui aborde la saison 2019. Suleiman affiche en effet en toute circonstance une maturité et une détermination tranquille qui lui permettent d’exploiter parfaitement son talent.
Le multiple Champion du Monde Davide Foré qui le coache cette saison confirmait cette impression positive : « J’ai retrouvé le pilote solide qui avait déjà brillé à Kristianstad pour sa première course après sept mois loin des circuits deux semaines en arrière. Suleiman a été très rapide dans les manches. Il a repris du terrain jusqu’à l’avant-dernière manche samedi après-midi sans commettre d’erreur et en signant avec régularité des temps excellents à moins d’un dixième des meilleurs. Sa capacité à gérer les courses avec intelligence m’a vraiment fait plaisir. Pas de doute, c’est un jeune homme qui apprend très vite. Je pense que sa machine était légèrement moins performante dimanche, sinon je suis sûr qu’il était capable de finir dans le top 5 ou même mieux. »
Le meeting n’avait pourtant pas commencé sous les meilleurs auspices puisqu’une météo capricieuse perturbait le déroulement des essais qualificatifs. L’adhérence de la piste variait en effet en quelques secondes sous l’effet d’une fine pluie intermittente. Difficile dans ces conditions de prévoir le réglage idéal du kart et de donner le maximum sans sortir de la piste. Avec une relative prudence, Suleiman se retrouvait 29e sur 76 au classement cumulé des trois séries.
Cette situation moins avantageuse qu’espéré ne troublait cependant pas le jeune Marocain du club OCK qui abordait les manches qualificatives avec calme et détermination. Beaucoup plus rapide que lors des essais libres, il faisait preuve très régulièrement d’une très bonne vitesse sur le sec, pointant souvent parmi les cinq plus rapides, tout en dépassant plusieurs adversaires à chaque course. Il était confronté dans les deux dernières à des pilotes ayant choisi de monter en avance leur dernier train de pneus neufs, mais parvenait malgré tout à conclure cette phase importante en 14e position avec un gain substantiel de 15 places depuis les chronos.
Bien que s’élançant pour la finale depuis la 7e ligne, au coeur du peloton, Suleiman évitait les incidents du départ et poursuivait son ascension sans aucune précipitation, préparant ses attaques avec soin. Il regagnait encore 6 places pour atteindre finalement une flatteuse 9e position.
« Je suis très content de ma course », confiait le jeune espoir marocain soutenu par Cool Performance. « J’ai fait le maximum en toute occasion et c’était très plaisant. J’aurais aimé pouvoir viser un résultat encore plus gratifiant, mais je ne me plains pas, c’était un très bon week-end. J’adresse un grand merci à Eric et Alain Verdaasdonk du team VDK Racing et une dédicace spéciale à Gabriele Bassetta, mon fidèle mécanicien. J’ai hâte de retourner en Suède dans moins de deux semaines pour disputer la 3e épreuve du Championnat d’Europe avec des ambitions plus élevées ».
