Sur la lancée de son premier top 10 européen à Genk (BEL), Suleiman Zanfari a encore amélioré son score en atteignant la 8e position finale lors de l’épreuve de Kristianstad (SWE).
Son parcours suédois n’a pourtant pas été des plus faciles après une étrange baisse de performance entre les essais libres et les essais chronométrés. Le jeune pilote marocain a fait preuve de beaucoup de détermination pour limiter sa prise de risques durant les manches avant d’intensifier son effort lors d’une remontée finale de 10 places qui lui a permis de terminer au 8e rang des 91 participants OK-Junior.
La 3e épreuve du Championnat d’Europe FIA Karting – Junior s’est déroulée du 31 mai au 2 juin 2019 sur le tracé de l’Åsum Ring, près de Kristianstad, celui-là même sur lequel Suleiman avait effectué un retour remarqué à la compétition karting un mois plus tôt. Cette fois, la température était plus printanière et la pluie n’a pas perturbé le déroulement des courses. Le pilote du club marocain OCK étrennait pour l’occasion un Tony Kart/Vortex du Team Ward Racing et se révélait déjà très rapide lors des essais libres. Sa session chronométrée officielle se déroulait malheureusement moins bien qu’il pouvait logiquement espérer. Parti en 3e série, il devait composer avec des conditions de piste légèrement moins favorables et son 8e temps se transformait en une 26e position au classement général.
Parti depuis la 5e ligne lors des manches qualificatives, Suleiman adoptait une stratégie relativement prudente pour éviter les incidents fréquents dans cette phase de la compétition. Sa grande régularité, même lorsqu’il devait faire face à des concurrents ayant chaussé en avance leur train de pneus neufs, s’avérait payante puisqu’il reprenait déjà 8 positions et se retrouvait cette fois sur la 9e ligne de la grille de départ de la finale avec un nouveau challenge à relever.
Auteur comme souvent d’un excellent départ, Suleiman continuait à reprendre du terrain au fil des tours avec un cocktail détonnant de combativité et de lucidité qui caractérise désormais son nouveau style de pilotage. Après 21 tours disputés le couteau entre les dents, Suleiman terminait 8e, soit une place de mieux qu’à Genk, en devenant un ainsi habitué du top 10.
« L’ensemble du week-end suédois n’était peut-être pas aussi excitant qu’en Belgique, mais le résultat final est au moins aussi gratifiant », analysait Suleiman. « Tout s’est bien passé chez Ward Racing et pourtant la compétition européenne de Kristianstad a toujours été délicate. Il me fallait regagner du terrain sans commettre d’erreur. Je pense que j’ai bien rempli ma mission, en tout cas j’ai fait le maximum. Je suis donc satisfait, même si je ne peux que regretter le déroulement des essais chronométrés. Il est certain que la course aurait été différente si je m’étais élancé plus près des avant-postes dans les manches ».
Bien aidé par les conseils avisés du grand champion Davide Foré, son coach depuis le début de la saison, et par ceux de son mécanicien Gabriele Bassetta, Suleiman est encore plus motivé pour obtenir un très bon résultat au Mans le mois prochain pour la conclusion du Championnat d’Europe, ravi de rouler sous les couleurs de l’équipe de Joakim Ward. Le pilote soutenu par Cool Performance va d’ailleurs intensifier sa préparation au cours des semaines à venir.
The rise of Suleiman Zanfari continues in Sweden
In the wake of his first European top 10 at Genk (BEL), Suleiman Zanfari further improved his score by reaching 8th in the Final at Kristianstad (SWE). His Swedish event was not easy after a strange drop in performance between Free Practice and Timed Practice. The young Moroccan driver showed great determination to limit his risk-taking during the heats before intensifying his effort during a Final climb of 10 places which allowed him to finish 8th out of 91 participants OK-Junior.
The third round of the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior took place from 31st May to 2nd June 2019 on the Åsum Ring track near Kristianstad, the same one where Suleiman had made a remarkable comeback to kart racing a month earlier. This time the weather was more spring-like and rain did not disrupt the running of the races. The driver from the Moroccan club OCK raced a Tony Kart / Vortex with Team Ward Racing and was already very fast in Free Practice. His official timed session was unfortunately not as good as he could logically have hoped for. Starting in the third session, he had to cope with slightly less favourable track conditions and his 8th time turned into a 26th overall position.
Starting from the 5th row during the Qualifying Heats, Suleiman adopted a relatively cautious strategy to avoid frequent incidents in this phase of the competition. His great consistency, even when he had to face competitors who had put their new tyres on early, was paying off as he had already taken eight positions and was this time on the 9th row of the starting grid for the Final with a new challenge to take up.
As usual making a great start, Suleiman continued to regain ground over the course of the laps with an explosive cocktail of fighting spirit and calmness that now characterises his new style of driving. After 21 laps driven in full attacking mode, Suleiman finished 8th, a place higher than at Genk and another top 10.
“The entire Swedish weekend was perhaps not as exciting as in Belgium, but the end result is at least as rewarding,” Suleiman said. “Everything went well at Ward Racing although Kristianstad’s European competition has always been tricky. I had to regain ground without making mistakes. I think that I fulfilled my mission, and in any case I did my best. So I am satisfied, although I can only regret what happened in Timed Practice. It is certain that the race would have been different if I had started closer to the front in the heats.”
Well supported by the advice of the great champion Davide Foré, his coach since the beginning of the season, and his mechanic Gabriele Bassetta, Suleiman is more motivated than ever to get a very good result at Le Mans next month for the conclusion of the European Championship, delighted to race under the colours of Joakim Ward’s team. The driver supported by Cool Performance will also intensify his preparation in the coming weeks.
L’ascesa di Suleiman Zanfari prosegue in Svezia
Sulla scia della sua prima Top-10 europea a Genk (BEL), Suleiman Zanfari ha migliorato ancora una volta il suo risultato raggiungendo l’ottavo posto in finale in occasione della prova di Kristianstad (SWE). La tappa svedese non è stata tuttavia una delle più facili dopo uno strano calo di performance tra le prove libere e le prove cronometrate. Il giovane pilota marocchino ha dato prova di grande determinazione per limitare i rischi nel corso delle manche, per poi impegnarsi a fondo in una rimonta finale di dieci posizioni che gli ha permesso di classificarsi all’ottavo posto su 91 partecipanti nella OK-Junior.
La terza prova del Campionato europeo FIA Karting – Junior si è svolta dal 31 maggio al 2 giugno 2019 sul tracciato dell’Åsum Ring, vicino a Kristianstad, lo stesso dove Suleiman era tornato trionfante alle gare di karting solo un mese fa. Questa volta la temperatura era più primaverile e la pioggia non ha disturbato lo svolgimento delle gare. Il pilota del club marocchino OCK ha inaugurato per l’occasione un Tony Kart/Vortex del Team Ward Racing rivelandosi già molto veloce dalle prove libere. La sua sessione di prove cronometrate ufficiali si è svolta purtroppo meno bene di quanto potesse sperare. Partito in terza serie, ha dovuto affrontare delle condizioni di pista leggermente meno favorevoli e il suo ottavo tempo si è trasformato in un 26° posto in classifica generale.
Partito dalla quinta fila nelle manche di qualificazione, Suleiman ha adottato una strategia relativamente prudente per evitare i frequenti incidenti che si verificano in questa fase della gara. La sua grande regolarità, anche quando ha dovuto affrontare dei concorrenti che avevano montato gli pneumatici nuovi in anticipo, si è rivelata proficua poiché è riuscito a recuperare otto posizioni ritrovandosi stavolta in nona fila sulla griglia di partenza della finale con una nuova sfida da affrontare.
Autore, come spesso accade, di un’eccellente partenza, Suleiman ha continuato a recuperare terreno giro dopo giro con un mix sorprendente di combattività e lucidità che caratterizza ormai il suo nuovo stile di guida. Al termine dei ventuno giri disputati con il coltello tra i denti, Suleiman ha concluso ottavo, recuperando una posizione rispetto a Genk e diventando così un habitué della Top-10.
“Il mezzo del week-end svedese non era forse così entusiasmante come in Belgio, ma il risultato finale è altrettanto gratificante”, ha analizzato Suleiman. “Tutto è andato bene nel team Ward Racing eppure la competizione europea di Kristianstad è sempre stata delicata. Dovevo riguadagnare terreno senza commettere errori. Penso di avere compiuto la missione, ad ogni modo ho fatto il massimo. Posso ritenermi quindi soddisfatto, anche se sono dispiaciuto di come si sono svolte le prove cronometrate. È chiaro che la gara sarebbe stata diversa se fossi partito da una posizione meno arretrata nelle manche”.
Aiutato dai consigli del grande campione Davide Forè, il suo allenatore da inizio stagione, e da quelli del suo meccanico Gabriele Bassetta, Suleiman è ancora più motivato a ottenere un ottimo risultato a Le Mans il mese prossimo in occasione della fase finale del Campionato europeo, e contento di gareggiare con i colori del team di Joakim Ward. Il pilota supportato da Cool Performance intensificherà la sua preparazione nel corso delle prossime settimane.
