For its first edition, the Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy was the scene of powerful sporting clashes from Thursday 22nd to Friday 23rd August at the Le Mans Karting International Circuit.
After 42 Qualifying Heats, the six categories in contention finally revealed the order of their finalists, who will all be back on track on Saturday, 24th August for the big closing day of this new major event of the season.
The good weather continued in the Le Mans region to the delight of the participants and their supporters. Thanks to the joint organisation by the ACO, 3MK Events and BRP Rotax, the atmosphere was really friendly in the paddock of Le Mans where a large shaded Fan Zone gathered all the spectators around many trade stands.
On the magnificent circuit of Le Mans, the races were exciting to experience from start to finish of these Qualifying phases. The competitiveness and fairness of the Rotax Max engines enabled fights between top drivers from around the world. Some competitors left their hopes at the side of the track, while others felt their wings grow for the Final stages scheduled for Saturday, 24th August from 10:00 to 17:00.
Micro: Lenn Nijs takes the lead
The duel that started in Timed Practice between Thomas Strauven (BEL – Exprit) and Lenn Nijs (BEL – Exprit) continued in the first two heats where the two GKS drivers traded the top places. Strauven however had difficulties at the start of the last heat and finished only 29th, which relegated him to 9th place. Nijs added a second victory to his score and seized the lead against Colin Wazny (POL-Parolin) and Nando Weixenbaumer (AUT-Exprit), while Christopher El Feghali (LBN-KR) and Anton Laksonen (FIN-Parolin) stayed in the top five.
Bernier finishes at the top of the Mini heats
The poleman in the Mini category, Valentin Hervas (FRA – Birel ART), was forced to concede ground against determined opponents. Three other drivers shared the victories. Augustin Bernier (FRA – KR) was gaining momentum and won the last race while taking the lead in front of Jolan Raccamier (FRA – Birel ART) and Simon Birch Kristensen (DNK – Birel ART) who completed a beautiful race to return from 8th to 3rd position. Behind Hervas, in 4th, Karel Schulz (FRA – Parolin) gained 11 places and was back in the top five.
DD2: Poleman Munaretto confirms in the heats
Luca Munaretto (ITA – Birel ART) was the best in Qualifying and had two decisive victories to keep the advantage at the end of the heats against his main rival, Paolo Besancenez (FRA – Sodi), who was very consistent in 2nd position. Claudio Pagliarani (ITA – Tony Kart) was back in the top three ahead of Dionisios Liveris (GRC – Tony Kart) and Matthias Njeim (LBN – Birel ART) while Daniel Machacek (AUT – Tony Kart) dropped back in the final heat and was 7th behind Max Fleischmann (DEU – Exprit) who managed a great comeback.
Mange regains the ascendancy in DD2 Masters
Starting from 5th position in Qualifying, Romain Mange (FRA – Tony Kart) performed well in the heats to win the lead with two 2nd places and a win. The poleman Carl Cleirbaut (BEL – Tony Kart) did well to rank 2nd against Primoz Matelic (SVN – Praga), slightly less convincing. Slawomir Muranski (POL – Tony Kart) and Roberto Pesevski (AUT – Sodi) were in the top five ahead of Scott Howard (AUS – Sodi) who had won the first heat.
The highlights of the meeting, the Senior and Junior categories had 15 Qualifying Heats each on their schedule, i.e. five races per driver. The top 36 qualified for Final A, the following being split between Finals B and C.
Van Vugt unbeatable in Junior
The poleman Mike Van Vugt (NLD – Exprit) completed a remarkable run of five wins to confirm his status as favourite against Oli Pylka (POL – FA Kart) who followed him closely with four wins and a 2nd position to his credit. Dani Van Dijk (NLD – Exprit) and Kai Hunter (GBR – FA Kart) made good progress in 3rd and 4th places a few lengths from the first two. Esteban Masson (FRA – Kosmic) had taken three superb victories since his 16th place in Qualifying before encountering some difficulties and taking 5th place in the standings.
Gazeau dominates the Senior heats
Already the holder of pole position, César Gazeau (FRA – FA Kart) did not give anything away to his opponents by winning his five Qualifying Heats in the highly contested Senior category. Illian Bruynseels (BEL – Tony Kart) took 2nd place with great consistency ahead of Oakley Pryer (GBR – Tony Kart). Valentin Gil (FRA – Tony Kart) and Lewis Gilbert (GBR – Tony Kart) completed the top five ahead of Rhys Hunter (GBR – FA Kart), who climbed from 34th to 6th place. Dylan Léger (FRA – OTK) did not reap the benefits of his efforts by finishing 8th after dropping back in the fourth heat, while Lachlan Robinson (ARE – OTK) was 13th after an incident in the same race.
The day ended with the Drivers Presentation which reflected the joy of participating in a first-rate event. A draw was then held to win a magnificent Can-Am Ryker, Rotax BRP’s spectacular three-wheeled recreational vehicle, with an acrobatic demonstration, as well as vouchers from Itakashop and others to use in the trade village.

Batailles intenses à tous les niveaux dans les manches du RMCIT
Pour sa première édition, le Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy a été le théâtre de puissants affrontements sportifs du jeudi 22 au vendredi 23 août sur le Circuit International Le Mans Karting. Au terme de 42 manches qualificatives, les six catégories en lice ont finalement révélé la hiérarchie de leurs différents finalistes qui vont tous se retrouver à nouveau en piste samedi 24 août pour la grande journée de clôture de ce nouvel évènement majeur de la saison.
Le beau temps a continué de régner sur la région du Mans pour le plus grand plaisir des participants et de leurs accompagnateurs. Grâce à l’organisation conjointe de l’ACO, de 3MK Events et de BRP Rotax, l’ambiance était vraiment très conviviale dans le paddock du Mans où une large Fan Zone ombragée rassemblait tous les passionnés autour de nombreux stands de partenaires.
Sur le magnifique tracé du Mans, les courses étaient passionnantes à vivre et à suivre d’un bout à l’autre de ces phases qualificatives. La compétitivité et l’équité des mécaniques Rotax Max permettaient d’assister à de belles bagarres entre les pilotes de haut niveau venus des quatre coins du monde pour cette occasion. Certains participants laissaient une partie de leurs espoirs au bord de la piste, tandis que d’autres se sentaient pousser des ailes en vue des phases finales programmées samedi 24 août de 10h00 à 17h00.
Micro : Lenn Nijs s’empare de la première place
Le duel qui avait débuté lors des essais chronométrés entre Thomas Strauven (BEL – Exprit) et Lenn Nijs (BEL – Exprit) se poursuivait dans les deux premières manches au cours desquelles les deux pilotes GKS s’échangeaient les deux premières places. Strauven rencontrait cependant des difficultés dès le départ de la dernière manche et terminait seulement 29e, ce qui le reléguait au 9e rang du classement. Nijs ajoutait une 2e victoire à son score et s’emparait du leadership face à Colin Wazny (POL- Parolin) et Nando Weixenbaumer (AUT – Exprit), tandis que Christopher El Feghali (LBN – KR) et Anton Laksonen (FIN – Parolin) se maintenaient dans le top 5.
Bernier conclut en tête des manches Mini
Le poleman de la catégorie Mini Valentin Hervas (FRA – Birel ART) a été obligé de céder du terrain face à des adversaires déterminés. Trois autres pilotes se sont en effet partagé les victoires. Augustin Bernier (FRA – KR) montait progressivement en puissance et s’imposait dans la dernière course tout en prenant la première place du classement devant Jolan Raccamier (FRA – Birel ART) et Simon Birch Kristensen (DNK – Birel ART) qui réalisait un beau parcours pour revenir de la 8e à la 3e position. Derrière Hervas, 4e, Karel Schulz (FRA – Parolin) progressait de 11 places et rentrait dans le top 5.
DD2 : le poleman Munaretto confirme dans les manches
Auteur du meilleur chrono, Luca Munaretto (ITA – Birel ART) remportait deux victoires décisives pour conserver l’avantage à l’issue des manches face à son principal rival, Paolo Besancenez (FRA – Sodi), très régulier en 2e position. Claudio Pagliarani (ITA – Tony Kart) rentrait dans le top 3 devant Dionisios Liveris (GRC – Tony Kart) et Matthias Njeim (LBN – Birel ART) tandis que Daniel Machacek (AUT – Tony Kart) chutait dans la dernière manche et se retrouvait 7e derrière Max Fleischmann (DEU – Exprit) qui réussissait une belle remontée.
Mange reprend l’ascendant en DD2 Masters
Partie de la 5e position des chronos, Romain Mange (FRA – Tony Kart) a effectué une belle prestation dans les manches pour s’adjuger la première position avec deux secondes places et une victoire. Le poleman Carl Cleirbaut (BEL – Tony Kart) n’a pas démérité pour se classer second face à Primoz Matelic (SVN – Praga), légèrement moins convaincant. Slawomir Muranski (POL – Tony Kart) et Roberto Pesevski (AUT – Sodi) rentraient dans le top 5 devant Scott Howard (AUS – Sodi) qui s’était pourtant imposé dans la première manche.
Pièces maîtresses du meeting, les catégories Senior et Junior avaient 15 manches qualificatives chacune à leur programme, soit cinq courses par pilote. Les 36 premiers étaient qualifiés pour les finales A, les suivants étant répartis entre les finales B et C.
Van Vugt imbattable en Junior
Le poleman Mike Van Vugt (NLD – Exprit) réalisait un parcours remarquable rempli de 5 victoires pour affirmer son statut de favori face à Oli Pylka (POL – FA Kart) qui le suivait de près avec 4 victoires et une 2e position à son actif. Dani Van Dijk (NLD – Exprit) et Kai Hunter (GBR – FA Kart) progressaient de belle manière aux 3e et 4e places à quelques distances des deux premiers. Esteban Masson (FRA – Kosmic) avait décroché 3 superbes victoires depuis sa 16e place sous le chrono avant de rencontrer quelques difficultés et de prendre la 5e place du classement.
Gazeau domine sans partage les manches Senior
Déjà auteur de la pole position, César Gazeau (FRA – FA Kart) n’a pas fait de cadeau à ses adversaires en remportant ses cinq manches qualificatives dans la très disputée catégorie Senior. Illian Bruynseels (BEL – Tony Kart) s’adjugeait la 2e position avec beaucoup de régularité devant Oakley Pryer (GBR – Tony Kart). Valentin Gil (FRA – Tony Kart) et Lewis Gilbert (GBR – Tony Kart) complétaient le top 5 devant Rhys Hunter (GBR – FA Kart) qui était remonté de la 34e à la 6e place. Dylan Léger (FRA – OTK) ne récoltait pas les fruits de ses efforts en se classant 8e après un abandon dans la 4e manche, tandis que Lachlan Robinson (ARE – OTK) se retrouvait 13e après un incident dans la même course.
La journée s’achevait par la présentation des pilotes qui traduisait bien la joie de tous de participer à un évènement de premier ordre. Un tirage au sort permettait ensuite de remporter un magnifique Can-Am Ryker, le spectaculaire véhicule de loisir routier à trois roues de Rotax BRP, ainsi qu’un baptême de l’air acrobatique, générateur de sensations fortes, des bons d’achats Itakashop et d’autres à utiliser dans le village des partenaires.
