Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the FIA Karting Academy Trophy quickly established itself as a cost-effective detection tool for young talents and proven a success both in terms of grid numbers as well producing future stars of motor sport.
The FIA Karting Academy Trophy was created in 2010. This original concept is still relevant today. It is about confronting 51 young talents between 12 and 14 years of age, from all over the world, every year so that the best have the opportunity to be noticed and to pursue their career in Karting or in Motorsport with greater opportunities. Through their ASNs, each country can enter its greatest hope in the Academy Trophy.
A detection and training operation, this formula offers the maximum guarantee in terms of sporting equality. To begin with, the cost of the three-event season is extremely reasonable, even unbeatable for an international competition of this level. Chassis, engines and tyres are identical for every participant, who draw lots for their equipment. The engines are exchanged regularly during each event. On the other hand, chassis adjustment is limited and does not require more than one regular mechanic. The CIK-FIA guarantees the smooth running of the events which take place on renowned circuits at the same time as other FIA Karting Championships, where the Academy Trophy shares the attention and media coverage.
Since 2010, several drivers who have participated in the FIA Karting Academy Trophy have risen to the pinnacle of Motorsport and Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Esteban Ocon are former Academicians. More generally, all the participants are able to enrich their experience and positively influence their careers by competing in the Academy Trophy, which has established itself as an excellent school for young talent, without requiring costly investment.
ASNs play an important role in the success of the Academy Trophy. They are the ones who select their national representative and can offer them the maximum chance of success. France’s approach is an interesting example.
“I would first remind that the FIA Karting Academy Trophy was launched when the President of the FFSA, Nicolas Deschaux, was President of the CIK-FIA” explains Christophe Lollier, the National Technical Director. “The FFSA has set up a very similar Academy on its own territory in order to train and detect its talents at the national level, The winner competes in the FIA Karting Academy Trophy and joins the official French Team where he is trained and advised. This boosts the national competition with a valuable reward.”
Each ASN is free to proceed as it sees fit, but it is certain that the greater its involvement, the greater the chances of success for its drivers.
The 2020 season has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Difficulties in making international trips and the health constraints imposed by some host countries led to a reduction in the number of staff, while other more personal reasons may also have had an effect. On average, about 30 drivers were able to take part in each race out of the 51 entered at the beginning of the season, but the competition was of a very high standard.

Célébrant son 10e anniversaire cette année, le Trophée Académie FIA Karting s’est rapidement imposé comme un outil de détection très efficace pour les jeunes talents et a rencontré le succès tant par le nombre de participants qu’en tant que révélateur de futures stars du sport automobile.
Le Trophée Académie FIA Karting a vu le jour en 2010. Ce concept original est toujours d’actualité. Il s’agit de confronter chaque année 51 jeunes talents entre 12 et 14 ans en provenance du monde entier afin que les meilleurs aient la possibilité de se faire remarquer et de poursuivre leur carrière en Karting ou en Sport Automobile avec de plus grandes opportunités. A travers son ASN, chaque pays peut engager son meilleur espoir dans le Trophée Académie.
Opération de détection et de formation, cette formule offre le maximum de garantie en ce qui concerne l’équité sportive. Pour commencer, le coût de la saison de trois épreuves est extrêmement raisonnable, voire imbattable pour une compétition internationale de ce niveau. Châssis, moteurs et pneumatiques sont identiques pour tous les participants qui tirent au sort leur matériel. Les mécaniques sont échangées régulièrement lors de chaque épreuve. D’autre part, le réglage du châssis est limité et ne nécessite pas plus d’un mécanicien attitré. La CIK-FIA garantit le bon déroulement sportif des épreuves qui ont lieu sur des circuits renommés en même temps que d’autres Championnats FIA Karting dont le Trophée Académie partage la couverture et les retombées médiatiques.
Depuis 2010, plusieurs pilotes ayant participé au Trophée Académie FIA Karting se sont hissés jusqu’au sommet du Sport Automobile. Les pilotes de Formule 1 Charles Leclerc, George Russell ou encore Esteban Ocon sont en effet d’anciens Académiciens. De manière plus générale, tous les participants ont pu enrichir leur expérience et influer positivement sur leur carrière en disputant le Trophée Académie qui s’affirme comme une excellente école pour les jeunes talents, sans nécessiter de coûteux investissements.
Les ASN jouent un rôle important dans la réussite du Trophée Académie. Ce sont elles qui sélectionnent leur représentant national et qui peuvent lui offrir le maximum de chance de réussir. La démarche de la France propose un exemple intéressant.
« Je voudrais d’abord rappeler que le Trophée Académie FIA Karting a été lancé alors que le Président de la FFSA, Nicolas Deschaux, était Président de la CIK-FIA », explique Christophe Lollier, le Directeur Technique National. « Nous avons mis en place en France une Académie très similaire afin de former et détecter ses talents au niveau national. Le vainqueur gagne sa place dans le Trophée Académie et intègre l’Equipe de France où il est entraîné et conseillé. Cela permet de dynamiser la compétition nationale en offrant une belle récompense ».
Chaque ASN est libre de procéder comme bon lui semble, mais il est certain que plus son implication est importante, plus les chances de réussite de ses pilotes sont grandes.
La saison 2020 a été perturbée par la pandémie de la COVID-19. Les difficultés pour effectuer des voyages internationaux et les contraintes sanitaires imposées par certains pays hôtes ont amené une réduction des effectifs, d’autres raisons plus personnelles ayant sans doute compté également. En moyenne, une trentaine de pilotes a pu participer à chaque course sur les 51 engagés du début de saison, mais la compétition a été d’un très bon niveau.
