Lucio Álvarez finished the first 19 km of the timed section in thirteenth position, in what was a first contact with the real competition at the wheel of his Toyota HiluxT1 +. They have been 19 km with some dunes so that the participants could get in touch with what seems to be the usual trend of this edition of the Dakar. Fast tracks and lots of sand.
This prologue was used for the top ten to choose the starting position, but there were quite a few who preferred to take things slowly and see how the vehicle responded in each of the circumstances of the special.
Lucio and Armand started the first stage of the Rally with nerves and a bit of distraction due to a problem with the GPS. “The car went well, but before we started we had a lot of nerves and some stressful moments. Neither GPS started up and one started just twelve seconds to start and that made me leave unconcentrated since we didn’t know if it was working well or not. Then it was a very short special in which not even the wheels reached their ideal temperature but it was “entertaining” These small details deconcentrate you, but well after all I think it was a good special “, commented Lucio, who explained why it was due the problem. “It is a problem with electronic components due to the fire in the factory that produces them and COVID, something that has nothing to do with the car or its preparation by Overdrive. It seems that the one that supplies all these components did not have enough material for all the cars ”
Apart from this problem and the initial nerves, Lucio wanted to check that everything in the car was working perfectly and set a sustained rhythm for these first 19 km of the special, finishing thirteenth, one second ahead of Peterhansel and 10 seconds from tenth position , showing that even with this lack of concentration, he can be among the top ten from the start to face the race with the speed and patience that is needed in the Dakar, which will have its first real special tomorrow day 2 with those 333 km against the chrono.
The Toyota HiluxT1 + has proven its competitiveness and in the hands of Al-Attiyah it set the best time ahead of Carlos Sainz’s Audi.

Una etapa prólogo caracterizada por un largo y tedioso enlace de inicio de 225 km a una velocidad de entre 100 y 120 km/h como velocidad máxima controlada por GPS, tras los cuales se ha disputado una primera especial de 19 km y después otro largo enlace de 589 Km hasta Ha’il para completar los 833,5 km de la primera etapa.
Lucio Álvarez ha terminado los 19 primeros km de tramo cronometrado en la decimotercera posición, en lo que ha sido una primera toma de contacto con la competición real al volante de su Toyota HiluxT1+. Han sido 19 km de una especial más rápida de lo que suelen ser habitualmente los prólogos y con algo de dunas para que los participantes pudieran tomar contacto con lo que parece va a ser la tónica habitual de esta edición del Dakar. Pistas rápidas y mucha arena.
Este prólogo servía para que los diez primeros eligieran posición de salida, pero hubo bastantes que prefirieron tomarse las cosas con calma e ir viendo como respondía el vehículo en cada una de las circunstancias de la especial.
Lucio y Armand arrancaron la primera especial del Rallye con nervios y un poco de desconcentración debido a un problema con el GPS.
“La camioneta fue bien, pero antes de tomar la salida tuvimos muchos nervios y unos momentos estresantes. No se ponía en marcha ninguno de los dos GPS y uno arrancó a solo doce segundos para tomar la salida y eso me hizo salir desconcentrado ya que no sabíamos si estaba funcionando bien o no. Después era una especial muy corta en la que ni las ruedas alcanzaban su temperatura ideal pero fue “entretenida” Estos pequeños detalles te desconcentran, pero bueno después de todo creo que fue una buena especial”, comentaba el mendocino, que explicó a que fue debido el problema. “Es un problema de componentes electrónicos debido al incendio en la factoría que los produce y al COVID, algo que no tiene nada que ver con la camioneta ni su preparación por parte de Overdrive. Parece que el que suministra todos estos componentes no tenía suficiente material para todos los coches”
Al margen de ese problema y los nervios iniciales, Lucio quiso comprobar que todo en el coche funcionaba perfectamente y se marcó un rimo sostenido para estos primeros 19 km de especial, terminando decimotercero, un segundo por delante de Peterhansel y a 10 segundos de la décima posición, demostrando que incluso con esa desconcentración que comentaba, puede estar entre los diez primeros desde el inicio para afrontar la carrera con la velocidad y paciencia que se necesita en el Dakar, que tendrá su primera verdadera especial mañana día 2 con esos 333 km contra el crono.
El Toyota HiluxT1+ ha demostrado su competitividad y en manos de Al-Attiyah marcó el mejor tiempo por delante del Audi de Carlos Sainz.
