Perhaps there is no better sport to get truly in touch with the authentic soul of our mountain, with the beauty of its landscapes, the evocative atmosphere of the woods.
And to test the summits already ride by the greatest champions of the snow will surely be an emotion for athletes of all ages who gather in our beautiful Olympic Valleys from every part of the world.
To all of them our warm welcome, sure that the hospitality of Sestriere, Cesana, Claviere, Pragelato and Bardonecchia will be the brightest star in this amazing experience!

È con particolare piacere che diamo il benvenuto a tutti gli appassionati di Orienteering che si daranno appuntamento questa estate, in Piemonte, in occasione dei World Master Games 2013.
Forse non c’è sport migliore per entrare veramente in contatto con l’anima autentica della nostra montagna, con la bellezza dei suoi panorami, l’atmosfera suggestiva dei sui boschi.
E mettersi alla prova sulle vette già cavalcate dai più grandi campioni delle neve sarà certamente un’emozione in più per gli atleti di ogni età che si riverseranno nelle nostre splendide Vallate Olimpiche da ogni parte del mondo.
A tutti loro il nostro caloroso benvenuto, certi che l’ospitalità di Sestriere, Cesana, Claviere, Pragelato e Bardonecchia, sarà la “lanterna” più luminosa di questa straordinaria esperienza!

President of the Organizing Committee of the 2013 WMOC INTERVIEW

Franco Capra, Mayor of Claviere, is the President of the Organizing Committee of the 2013 WMOC. His experience as Mayor of an Olympic City during the Olympic Winter Games of Torino 2006 is a valuable contribution in the organization of this important international event involving the Olympic Mountains.

Q: Mr. President, working for an international event of this importance makes essential a great union of forces over the territory?
A: The Olympic Mountain Cities, since the first moments of the organization of the Olympic Games of Torino 2006, are accustomed to working together and for this event we were promptly put to work in great harmony between private and public,among municipalities, hotels, ski clubs, touristic operators, all of us aware of the importance of this World Championship and of the relevance that may have on our territory.

Q: A territory that we can say has both logistical and receptive skills and human resources to organize as best as possible the WMOC 2013?
A: Certainly, the Olympic Mountains offer hospitality entertainment of great level, housing options for all needs but always with great attention to quality, culture and traditions, leisure and sports facilities. And Olympic heritage makes us competitive also in terms of human resources that live in these mountains and even on this occasion there are precious to organize and operate, as always, all in the best possible way.

Q: So we can say a “Gold medal staff”?
A: Yes, without any doubts. The Organizing Committee of the 2013 WMOC is joined by technical staff of the highest level, which I would like to thank you for the work they are doing. In particular I want to mention one name for all: the Event Manager Francesco Rustichelli. Are plenty of those to thank for the enthusiasm and passion: in one word I can say “Volunteers”, of which a fundamental part is constituted by the alpine troops of the Italian Army “Alpini”, soldiers and veterans.

Q: Orienteering is a kind of new sport in Italy and for the Olympic Mountains, according to you which could be the reaction of the territory?
A: The welcome to the athletes of Orienteering will be, as always, with open arms. I want to thank the hotels of the territory for the precious help that they decided to give the Organizing Committee with the purchase of the bracelet that will be given to each athlets and their staff to take advantage of discounts and services dedicated to them during their stay in the Olympic Mountains and in Turin and its province. I can say with pleasure that our hotels are an important part of the organization.

Q: Do you think you will have a territorial return of image thanks to the WMOC 2013?
A: Yes I do. Firstly because I am sure that the beauty of our mountains will be appreciated and so the organization and hospitality and I hope this can stimulate the will of our friends and their families to return to the Olympic Mountains not only in summer but also in winter. And then I think this event will bring many Italians to appreciate this beautiful sport, in contact with nature, and, at different levels, suitable for everyone. And the inclusion of this event within the World Masters Games of Torino 2013 will give a huge notoriety to Orienteering throughout Italy.

INTERVISTA al Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore dei WMOC 2013

Franco Capra, Sindaco di Claviere, è il Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore dei WMOC 2013. La sua esperienza di primo cittadino già durante i Giochi Olimpici di Torino 2006 è un prezioso contributo nell’organizzazione di questo nuovo importante e grande evento internazionale che coinvolge le Montagne Olimpiche.

D: Presidente Capra, lavorare per un evento internazionale di questo portata rende indispensabile una grande unione di forze sul territorio?
R: I comuni delle Montagne Olimpiche, sin dai primi momenti dell’organizzazione delle Olimpiadi di Torino 2006, sono più che mai abituati a lavorare insieme e per questo evento ci siamo prontamente messi all’opera in grande armonia fra pubblico e privato, fra amministrazioni comunali, albergatori, sci club, gestori degli impianti, operatori turistici, consapevoli dell’importanza di questo Campionato Mondiale e della rilevanza che potrà avere sul nostro territorio.

D: Un territorio che possiamo affermare ha sia le capacità logistiche e ricettive sia le risorse umane per ospitare un appuntamento come i WMOC 2013.
R: Certamente, le Montagne Olimpiche offrono ospitalità alberghiera e ristorazione di grandissimo livello, possibilità di alloggiamento per tutte le esigenze ma sempre con grande attenzione alla qualità, cultura e tradizioni, svago e impianti sportivi. E l’eredità olimpica ci rende competitivi anche sul fronte delle risorse umane che vivono in queste montagne e anche in questa occasione ci sono preziose per organizzare e gestire, come sempre, tutto nel migliore dei modi.

D: Uno staff da medaglia d’oro?
R: Senza dubbio. Il comitato organizzatore dei WMOC 2013 è affiancato da uno staff di tecnici di primissimo livello, che mi preme ringraziare per il lavoro che stanno svolgendo. In particolare voglio citare un nome per tutti: l’Event Manager Francesco Rustichelli. Sono tantissimi quelli da ringraziare per l’entusiasmo e la passione che ci stanno mettendo e ci metteranno durante l’evento sportivo: li racchiuderei in una parola i “Volontari”, dei quali una parte fondante è sicuramente costituita dagli Alpini in arme e in congedo.

D: L’Orienteering è uno sport relativamente nuovo per le Montagne Olimpiche, che risposta ha dato il territorio?
R: L’accoglienza agli atleti dell’Orienteering sarà come sempre a braccia aperte. Voglio ringraziare gli albergatori del territorio per il prezioso aiuto economico che hanno deciso di dare al comitato organizzatore con l’acquisto del braccialetto che verrà dato a ogni atleta e accompagnatore per usufruire dei servizi e degli sconti loro dedicati durante la loro permanenza nelle Montagne Olimpiche e a Torino e provincia. Posso con piacere affermare che i nostri albergatori sono una parte importante dell’organizzazione.

D: Lei pensa a un ritorno di immagine dei WMOC 2013?
R: Assolutamente si. In primo luogo perché sono certo che le bellezze delle nostre montagne saranno apprezzate e così l’organizzazione e l’accoglienza e spero che questo possa fare venire la voglia ai nostri amici atleti e ai loro familiari di tornare a trovarci non solo d’estate, ma anche in inverno. E poi penso che questo evento possa avvicinare molti italiani a un nuovo sport, bellissimo, a contatto con la natura, e, a diversi livelli, adatto a tutti. E l’inclusione di questo evento all’interno dei World Master Games di Torino 2013 non può essere che un volano alla diffusione e alla conoscenza più ampia dell’Orienteering.

Maps updated for the WMOC 2013

IOF Senior Event Adviser David May and National Controller Francesco Giandomenico spent the first week of June in Sestriere completing final checks on courses and maps, helping to ensure that all would be ready on time for the first week in August. All competition terrains were visited and many control sites were checked as well.

“It was a privilege to be out in such beautiful terrain”, said David May, “with only marmots, mountain hares and deer for company! The terrain for the Long Final is truly of world class and will test competitors’ orienteering skills to the full. The Qualification terrain has very fast running and high visibility, but appearances can be deceptive and runners will need to keep in contact with the map as relocation will be difficult at times. The change in Sprint venues also enhances the package and the organisers are confident that the overall programme will easily match the normal high standards of WMOC.”

All course setters and controllers were in Sestriere at the same time, catching up on time which had been lost to this year’s late snow (some control sites were still under several metres, even now!), whilst the time was also being used in updating all the competition maps. The logistics team was working hard too, covering all aspects of the competition from medical facilities to transport arrangements.

Work on preparation of Bulletin 2 is well under way and competitors should receive all the details they need at the beginning of July.

Mappe aggiornate in preparazione dei WMOC 2013

IOF Senior Event Adviser David May e il National Controller Francesco Giandomenico hanno trascorso la prima settimana di giugno a Sestriere completando le verifiche finali su percorsi e mappe, contribuendo a garantire che tutto sarebbe stato pronto in tempo per la prima settimana di agosto. Tutti i terreni di gara sono stati visitati e molti siti di controllo che sono stati controllati.

“E’ stato un privilegio essere in un terreno così bello – ha detto David May – con intorno a noi solo marmotte, lepri e cervi a tenerci compagnia! Il terreno per il lungo finale è assolutamente di livello mondiale e metterà alla prova le abilità degli atleti.. Il terreno di qualificazione è molto veloce in esecuzione e con un’elevata visibilità, ma con delle difficoltà che possono trarre in inganno. I corridori dovranno usare bene le mappe. Il cambiamento delle sedi della Sprint ha reso più interessante tutta la competizione e gli organizzatori sono fiduciosi che il programma complessivo corrisponderà agli standard elevati dei WMOC.”

Tutti i controller e i cartografi erano operativi a Sestriere, recuperando il tempo che era stato perso a causa del maltempo protrattosi sino a fine maggio (alcuni siti erano ancora sotto diversi metri). E’ stato eseguito l’aggiornamento di tutte le mappe di competizione. Anche la squadra logistica ha lavorato duro, seguendo tutti gli aspetti della competizione, dai servizi medici ai mezzi di trasporto.

I lavori in preparazione del bollettino 2 sono in corso e i concorrenti dovrebbero ricevere tutte le informazioni di cui che hanno bisogno all’inizio di luglio.

WMOC 2013 Olympic Mountain in Trentino June 15th and 16th

The Organizing Committee of WMOC 2013 will be in Trentino next weekend for the competitions organized by Oritrentino, the Trentino Orienteering Committee, June 15th and 16th.

Saturday, June 15 for the 11° JTT Race and Sunday June 16 the 4th Coppa Italia Long-Fai della Paganella.
