Sono 139 le cicliste, distribuite in 24 squadre, che parteciperanno al sedicesimo trofeo Alfredo Binda, seconda gara di Coppa del Mondo donne 2014 in programma domani in provincia di Varese. Al via ci saranno anche 13 campionesse nazionali oltre ad Elisa Longo Borghini, vincitrice della scorsa edizione. Tra le atlete maggiormente favorite per il successo va annoverata Elisabeth Armitstead, vincitrice della prima prova di Coppa del Mondo. TROFEO BINDA
Il Percorso
Il trofeo Binda 2014 avrà inizio alle ore 13.30 da Laveno Mombello (VA).Il gruppo pedalerà in direzione di Monvalle, Leggiuno, Caravate, Gemonio e Cittiglio che si raggiungerà dopo 17 chilometri. Quindi la gara dirigerà a Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Rancio Valcuvia, Cassano Valcuvia, Mesenzana, Grantola, Cunardo, Bedero Valcuvia, Brinzio, Castello Cabaglio,Orino, Azzio, Gemonio e Cittiglio. A quel punto la gara percorrerà quattro giri di circuito di 17 chilometri per Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Comacchio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio per un totale di km 123. Sono due le salite che caratterizzano la competizione; la Grantola, che il gruppo affronterà dopo 30 km dal via e la salita di Orino che, all’ultimo giro, sarà a soli 8 chilometri dall’arrivo.

Il Percorso
Il trofeo Da Moreno – memorial Ersilio Ferrario per juniores prenderà avvio alle ore 9.30 da Laveno Mombello e si concluderà a Cittiglio, dopo un percorso complessivo di km 62. Da Laveno si raggiunge Momvalle,Sangiano, Caravate, Gemonio e Cittiglio, poi quattro giri per Brenta e Casalzuigno, quindi la salita di Orino e l’arrivo in via Valcuvia. Partecipano alla competizione 125 atlete, fra queste la campionessa del mondo Amalie Dideriksen e la campionessa europea Greta Richioud, le nazionali di Francia, Lituania, Slovacchia ed una rappresentativa proveniente dalla Germania. Per questo motivo la gara è ormai conosciuta come “Piccola Coppa del Mondo”.

Alfredo Binda, una favola dal 1902
Da sempre il ciclismo è nel cuore di Cittiglio e della provincia di Varese
Cittiglio, pochi chilometri a nord di Varese, è un paese piccolo, eppure conosciuto perché ha dato i natali al più grande campione che l’Italia abbia regalato al ciclismo mondiale: Alfredo Binda.
Nato nel 1902 e scomparso nel 1986, lanciato da un commerciante di biciclette italiano in Francia (a Nizza Binda collaborava con zio e fratello stuccatori), Binda fu ingaggiato dalla Legnano del mitico Eberardo Pavesi per dodicimila lire di stipendio annuo.
Debuttò ad alto livello nel Giro d’Italia del 1925, in teoria gregario, nei fatti libero di prendere iniziative: si dimostrò talmente ispirato da vincere la corsa rosa tra lo stupore dei tifosi. Fu l’abbrivio di una carriera ineguagliabile, fatta di 5 Giri come Coppi e Merckx (più uno… ad honorem: nel 1930 gli organizzatori lo pagarono per restare a casa), 3 titoli mondiali, 4 campionati italiani, 2 Milano-Sanremo, 41 tappe del Giro e 2 del Tour (purtroppo ne disputò uno solo, per motivi di sponsor), più mille altri trofei che stanno stretti in una bacheca pazzesca. Si ritirò nel ’36 dopo un rovinoso capitombolo alla Sanremo.
A guerra finita divenne ct della nazionale, riuscendo a far coesistere due galli come Bartali e Coppi: portò in Italia quattro maglie gialle (Bartali, due volte Coppi, Nencini) e due iridate (Coppi e Baldini). Furono lui e Gianni Brera a introdurre nel mondo del pedale il concetto di ammiraglia. Un campione straordinario, amatissimo ovunque, America compresa: il suo mito spopolò nell’era pre-televisiva, figurarsi che icona sarebbe stato se si fosse giovato dei media odierni.
La prima vita del Binda si chiuse nel ’96. Dopa due anni di stop, nel ’99 il comune di Cittiglio incaricò Mario Minervino di far risorgere la corsa. Detto fatto, divenne gara nazionale e poi internazionale, incoronando puntualmente fuoriclasse assolute e acquisendo un profilo di primo piano.
Dal 2008, persa la Sanremo donne, l’UCI ha designato il trofeo Binda come unica prova italiana di Coppa del Mondo, manifestazione inferiore solo a Olimpiadi e mondiali per fascino e prestigio.
E’ insomma la gara più importante del calendario italiano e si corre proprio sulle strade care ad Alfredo Binda, che quando non gareggiava in giro per il mondo soleva uscire in bici col fratello Albino, ingoiando chilometri sugli stessi saliscendi della Valcuvia che impegnano le campionesse di oggi.
L’annuale festa del Trofeo Binda è anche l’abbraccio di una terra che trasuda passione per le due ruote. Infatti Cittiglio e l’intero Varesotto partecipano con calore all’evento, il coinvolgimento delle scuole assicura la diffusione attraverso lo sport di messaggi educativi alle nuove generazioni. L’edizione 2014, poi, avrà come sempre qualche novità sui percorso con partenza da Laveno Mombello, quindi la ciclabile fino a Cittiglio per la partenza ufficiale.
Sarà come sempre decisiva per Ia selezione definitiva la salita di Orino: un’erta che sta al trofeo Alfredo Binda come il Mortirolo al Giro d’Italia e l’Alpe d’Huez, al Tour de France.

Trofeo Binda, 139 athletes at the starting line of the World Cup tomorrow
One hundred and thirty-nine cyclists, divided between 24 teams, will take part in the 16th Trofeo Alfredo Binda, second date of the Women’s World Cup 2014 scheduled for tomorrow in the province of Varese. Thirteen national champions, apart from last year’s winner, Elisa Longo Borghini, will partecipate in tomorrow’s race. One of the favourites for tomorrow is Elisabeth Armitstead, winner of the first World Cup race this year. National teams from Australia, France and Poland will participate: “I am delighted to welcome all the participating teams – announced Mario Minervino, president of Cycling Sport Promotion – and I would like to thank Cittiglio and Laveno Mombello as I wish to thank the local institutions which always warmly welcome this event. We are pleased with the enthusiasm created by the “Mini World Cup” and with all the projects which encourage cycling for young people. The Route
The Trofeo Binda 2014 will start at 13.30 from Laveno Mombello (Varese). The group wlll cycle to Monvalle, Leggiuno, Caravate, Gemonio and Cittiglio which is 17 km from Laveno. Then the race will travel through Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Rancio Valcuvia, Cassano Valcuvia, Mesenzana, Grantola, Cunardo, Bedero Valcuvia, Brinzio, Castello Cabaglio,Orino, Azzio, Gemonio and back to Cittiglio. At this point, there will be four circuits of 17 km through Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Comacchio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio for a total of 123 km. There are two noteworthy uphill climbs; Grantola, which the group will face after 30 km and Orino, which is just 8 km from the finish line.

In cycling, the environment is an integral part of exercising the sport and for this reason the cyclist is deeply respectful of the territory he/she observes from the saddle. For this reason, protection of the environment and promotion of the locality are part of the precious heritage of cycling, a point which the most astute organisers have taken to heart. Thus, the UCI “ReCycling” project which brings the environment theme to the fore, is born.
The project, which Cycling Sport Promotion launched successfully in 2012, has received the unanimous support of local and national institutions: the Ministry for the Environment and protection of land and sea, the Department for the Environment of the Lombardy Region and of the Varese Province,?the Verbano Valleys Mountain Community,?Local Action Groups for the lakes and mountains and for the Verbano Valleys as well as the Cittiglio?Municipality have supported and sustained the numerous initiatives.
The project is involved in:
?Disposal of waste created by the event and cleaning of the roads
??Employment of volunteers dedicated to managing the reCycling project
? Use of ecological stationery and of eco-compatible materials
? Road safety
? Education of athletes and their teams with regard to respect for the environment?
? Presentation of the reCycling project in schools
? Promotion?of the locality and local produce
? Use of accommodation which embraces culture and is respectful of the environment.
Alfredo Binda, a fairytale since 1902
Cycling has been at the heart of Cittiglio and the Varese Province since time began
Cittiglio, a small village located just a few kilometres north of Varese, is very well known because the greatest world class Italian cycling champion, Alfredo Binda, was born here.
Alfredo Binda was born in 1902 and died in 1986; he became famous thanks to an Italian bike shop owner in France (he was working as a plasterer together with his uncle and brother in Nice). His first real cycling job was racing for Team Legnano at the time of the great Eberardo Pavesi getting paid twelve thousand Lire (the equivalent of €6) per year.
He made his debut at high level at the Giro d’Italia 1925, he was supposed to play the role of helper for his team but he was free to take his chances: he was so determined that he actually won the Giro. That was the start of a career like no other, 5 times winner of the Giro d’Italia, like Coppi an Merckx (plus one… ad honorem: in 1930 the organizers paid him to stay at home), 3 World Champion titles, 4 times Italian champion, twice winner of the Milano-Sanremo, 41 stages at Giro d’Italia and 2 stages at the Tour de France (unfortunately he only did one Tour for sponsorship reasons), plus another thousand trophies that don’t even fit in a maxi display stand. He retired from competitions in 1936 after a terrible crash during the Milano-Sanremo.
At the end of his own war, he became manager of the Italian Team, managing to keep two of the greatest leaders, Bartali and Coppi together: he brought the Yellow Jersey to Italy four times (with Bartali, Coppi twice and Nencini) and twice the Rainbow Jersey (with Coppi and Baldini). It was thanks to Binda and Gianni Brera that the concept of the following team car was introduced into cycling. Alfredo Binda was an extraordinary champion, very much loved everywhere, USA included, he was big in the pre-television era, imagine how popular he would have been with the help of today’s media.
The first life cycle of the Trofeo Binda finished in 1996. After two years of not hosting the event, the Cittiglio City Council asked Mario Minervino to bring the race back to life. The Trofeo Binda first became a national race then international, crowning fantastic champions every year and becoming a high profile race.
Since 2008, the last year of the women’s Milano-Sanremo, the UCI has made the Trofeo Binda the only Italian race of the Women’s World Cup Circuit, a prestigious event, second only to Olympic Games and World Championships.
All things considered, it is the most important race of the Italian calendar and it takes place on the beloved roads of Alfredo Binda. When he wasn’t racing around the world, Binda used to go out on his bike with his brother Albino, grinding kilometres on the same hills of Valcuvia where today’s champions race.
The yearly event of the Trofeo Binda is also a celebration of a territory with a true passion for cycling. This is why Cittiglio and the entire Varese Province play an active role in the organization of the event. The involvement of schools guarantees a great audience for the educational messages to be passed down to the new generations through sport. The 2014 edition as always will bring some novelties on the route, the race will start from Laveno Mombello, then head to Cittiglio for the official start of the race.
As always, the Orino hill will be crucial and very selective, this hill defines the Trofeo Binda, just as Mortirolo defines the Giro d’Italia or Alpe d’Huez the Tour de France.
