A good summer of tourism shaped by the international situation

Tourist activity in Barcelona grew by around 6 % this summer as a result of an exceptional international situation, with particular problems in destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey and in major European cities such as Paris and Brussels.

Growth was even greater in Catalonia and Spain as a whole, where the same factors had an influence.

The improvement in Spain’s economic situation has also had an impact. In July 157,000 Spanish visitors came to Barcelona, an increase of 8.5 % and a total increase since January of 15 %.

Barcelona’s tourist industry will continue at a steady rate over the coming months thanks to its highly non-seasonal demand, meaning that summer holiday travel is replaced during the rest of the year by other types of travel, such as travel for business and meetings or weekend breaks. Turisme de Barcelona’s CEO, Jordi William Carnes, believes that this is one of the city’s particular strengths, along with the mix of segments and the wide range of nationalities among our visitors.
