IL XIV RADUNO VELE STORICHE VIAREGGIO
Dal 18 al 21 ottobre 2018, per il quattordicesimo anno consecutivo, la città toscana di Viareggio ospiterà il più importante e partecipato raduno-regata di fine stagione riservato agli yacht a vela d’epoca, classici, Spirit of Tradition e a quelli che rispetteranno criteri legati alla tradizione e all’importanza storica. La manifestazione è organizzata dall’Associazione Vele Storiche Viareggio (www.velestoricheviareggio.org), fondata nel 2005, e dal Club Nautico Versilia che come ogni anno metterà a disposizione la prestigiosa sede sociale, gli ormeggi e le strutture di accoglienza. L’AIVE, Associazione Italiana Vele d’Epoca, sarà responsabile della stazzatura delle imbarcazioni e delle classifiche per coloro che avranno scelto di regatare con il certificato di stazza CIM. I TROFEI AMMIRAGLIO CERRI E SANGERMANI
Il main sponsor dell’evento, la fiorentina Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella (www.smnovella.com), le cui origini risalgono addirittura al 1612, sosterrà il XIV Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio in partnership con la rinata acqua San Carlo (www.acquasancarlo.it), acquisita recentemente dallo stesso gruppo imprenditoriale. Tra gli altri sostenitori la Mediterranean Yacht Maintenance di Antonio Farigu, specializzata nel settore della motorizzazione e impiantistica di maxi yacht e barche d’epoca concessionario dei più importanti motori ed accessori della nautica, Picchiani & Barlacchi (oggettistica in metallo di alta qualità), la veleria Millenium, l’azienda di orologeria Locman, la viareggina RGB Cube, specializzata in grafica pubblicitaria, e il Rotary Club Viareggio Versilia, che assegnerà il Trofeo Challenge intitolato all’Ammiraglio Florindo Cerri. Per il quarto anno consecutivo verrà messo in palio anche il Trofeo Challenge Sangermani, riservato a tutti gli scafi varati dall’omonimo cantiere che parteciperanno alla manifestazione.
LA REGATA … E LA VELEGGIATA
Gli armatori che decideranno di regatare con il certificato di stazza CIM (Comitato Internazionale del Mediterraneo) e che si iscriveranno al XIV Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio, nel caso non ne fossero in possesso, potranno fare stazzare la propria barca fissando un appuntamento con lo stazzatore e presidente AIVE Piermaria Giusteschi Conti (Mob. +39 348 3148532). La partecipazione all’evento sarà comunque aperta anche alle barche d’epoca e classiche che correranno senza Certificato CIM, a quelle non associate alle Vele Storiche Viareggio e ad altre che vorranno solo compiere una veleggiata o sfidare singoli avversari. Tre le regate previste, che si svolgeranno da venerdì a domenica. Il pomeriggio dell’ultimo giorno, presso le sale del Club Nautico Versilia, si terrà la cerimonia di premiazione.
UN CAMPO DI REGATA PER LA CLASSE 5.50 METRI S.I.
Anche quest’anno, come già avvenuto nell’edizione dello scorso anno, al XIV Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio è prevista la partecipazione di un certo numero di barche appartenenti alla categoria dei 5.50 Metri S.I. (Stazza Internazionale), imbarcazioni nate ufficialmente nel 1949 ed ex classe olimpica per cinque edizioni, da Helsinki 1952 a Città del Messico 1968. A Viareggio i 5.50 S.I. si sfideranno su un campo di regata a loro riservato. Queste imbarcazioni a chiglia, lunghe 9,50 metri, hanno l’armo velico a sloop bermudiano e regatano con un equipaggio di tre persone. Si stima che nel mondo siano stati costruiti circa 800 scafi, oggi suddivisi nelle categorie Classici, Evoluzione e Moderni. Sui 5.50 S.I. hanno regatato grandi personaggi come Dario Salata, Max Oberti, Giulio Cesare Carcano, l’Ammiraglio Agostino Straulino e Beppe Croce. Tra i 5.50 che quest’anno festeggiano mezzo secolo dal varo anche Tara e la plurivittoriosa Carabella. L’attuale presidente della classe italiana è il Conte romano Fabrizio Cavazza, armatore di Volpina del 1960.
LE MOSTRE E LA VISITA ALLE BARCHE IN RESTAURO
A Viareggio non mancheranno le iniziative collaterali che da sempre hanno animato e coinvolto gli equipaggi sia prima che dopo le regate. Tra queste le dimostrazioni di tecniche marinaresche, l’esposizione in banchina di eventuali barche storiche su carrello, la possibilità di visitare gli scafi all’ormeggio e salire su quelli che avranno aderito all’iniziativa ‘Benvenuti a bordo’, oltre a mostre di acquerelli e di fotografie di regate di vele d’epoca. Venerdì pomeriggio 19 ottobre gli equipaggi visiteranno alcuni restauri di barche d’epoca presso il cantiere viareggino Francesco Del Carlo. Chi lo vorrà, attraverso il sito dell’associazione, potrà candidarsi come membro di equipaggio per partecipare alle regate oppure chiedere di imbarcarsi sul motorsailer Artiglio dell’omonimo Club Subacqueo per seguire da vicino le competizioni in mare.

THE AMMIRAGLIO F. CERRI AND SANGERMANI TROPHIES
The main sponsor of the event, the Santa Maria Novella Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica of Florence (www.smnovella.com), whose origins date back to 1612, will support the XIV Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats in partnership with the reborn San Carlo water (www.acquasancarlo.it), recently acquired by the same business group. Other supporters include Antonio Farigu’s Mediterranean Yacht Maintenance, that specializes in maxi yacht and historic boat motorization and installations; Picchiani & Barlacchi (high end metal objects); the sailmaker Millenium; Locman watchmakers, RGB Cube from Viareggio (advertising graphics) and the Versilia Viareggio Rotary Club, that will award the Challenge Trophy dedicated to Admiral Florindo Cerri. For the fourth consecutive year the Sangermani Challenge Trophy, open to all vessels launched by the Sangermani shipyards and participating in the event, will also be awarded.
THE REGATTA AND SAILING
Ship owners who register for the XIV Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats and wish to race with a CIM (International Mediterranean Committee) tonnage certificate, but do not possess it, can seek one for their vessel by making an appointment for measurement with AIVE’s President Piermaria Giusteschi Conti (cell phone +39-348-3148532). Participation in the event is also open to vintage and classic sailboats that do not have a CIM certificate, as well as to sailboats not affiliated with the Viareggio Historic Sailboat Association and other sailboats wishing to simply sail or compete against individual vessels. Three regattas are scheduled to take place from Friday through Sunday. On the afternoon of the last day there will be an award ceremony at the Versilia Nautical Club.
5.50 METER INTERNATIONAL TONNAGE CLASS
Once again, Viareggio is looking forward to the participation of a small fleet of 5.50-meter international tonnage class boats. Created officially in 1949, this class of boats raced in the Olympics for 5 times, beginning in Helsinki in 1952 and for the last time in Mexico City in 1968. These 9.50-meter long keelboats have Bermuda Sloop rigging and sail with a crew of 3 in regattas. An estimated 800 were built. Nowadays they are subdivided into the following categories: Classic, Evolution and Modern. The 5.50-meters have been sailed by greats such as Dario Salata, Max Oberti, Giulio Cesare Carcano, Admiral Agostino Straulino and Beppe Croce. Among the 5.50s celebrating the 50th anniversary of their launch is the Tara and the frequently victorious Carabella. The current president of the Italy class is Count Fabrizio Cavazza of Rome who is the owner of the 1960 Volpina.
EXHIBITS AND VISITS TO BOATS UNDERGOING RESTORATION
As always there will be many activities, both before and after the regattas. There will maritime technique demonstrations, viewings of vintage vessels on the quays and visits to berthed ones, as well as tours of the boats participating in the “Welcome Onboard” events. In addition, there will be exhibits of watercolors and photographs of historic regattas. On the afternoon of Friday, October 19th, crew members can visit the restoration work being done on historic sailboats at the Francesco Del Carlo Shipyard in Viareggio.
