Barcelona, the capital of lyrical and classical music

Barcelona is also the ideal destination for anyone with a passion for classical music and opera.

This is the philosophy and objective of Barcelona Obertura, the umbrella brand that brings together the Liceu, Auditori, Palau de la Música and Ibercamera under the Barcelona Global initiative with the support of Turisme de Barcelona. A total of eight musical packages designed to attract music lovers from Europe, Asia and the USA during the 2017/18 season.

Chamber music is the highlight of the first week in October. The programme features the Casals Quartet who will be performing the first phase of Beethoven’s symphonies at three concerts at the Auditori, a recital by Russian Daniil Trifonov and a concert performed by the Quiroga Quartet. The week’s final event will take place in the Liceu with Un ballo in maschera, starring Polish tenor Piotr Beczala. Two weeks later, under the title ‘A Mediterranean Autumn’ this initiative will offer audiences the chance to hear Giardino Armónico, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC), the Catalonia Choir (Orfeón Catalán) and Collegium Vocale Gent musical ensemble (who will be performing works by Claudio Monteverdi).

Another package takes advantage of the fact that the Liceo will be the venue for two operas staged simultaneously: the concert version of L’ incoronazzione di Poppea and Tristan and Isolde produced by La Fura (1st and 2nd December. The same formula will be applied early in 2018, with two works by Donizetti featured at the same time: Elisir d’amore produced by Mario Gas and the concert version of Poliuto, in addition to a performance by Martha Argerich at the Palau. February will be dedicated to orchestra music, with Heras Casado conducting the Munich Philharmonic; Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra for Ibercamera at the Auditori; or Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette conducted by Josep Pons at the Liceu, the venue where just ten days later Jonas Kaufmann and Diana Damrau will be singing.

Kaufman is also a major draw for the spring package featuring Andrea Chénier at the Liceu and British tenor Mark Padmore at the Palau. The end of the season will bring the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Simon Rattle; Philippe Jaroussky to Orfeo ed Euridici; Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at the Liceu; as well as Savall’s programme of music by Händel de Savall at the Albéniz Palace.
