Barcelona to host the 2019 European Cancer Congress

The decision to choose Barcelona acknowledges the city’s pioneering role in cancer research.

For the first time ever, between 27th September and 1st October 2019, Barcelona will be hosting Europe’s largest meeting of doctors, researchers and related personnel to share the latest advances in cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient care. The 2019 edition of the ESMO congress will bring over 22,000 specialists to the Fira de Barcelona exhibition site, who will have the chance to listen to the contributions of 300 experts from around the world.

The congress is organised by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in collaboration with the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR). According to Josep Tabernero, President of ESMO, Head of Oncology at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital and Director of the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, Barcelona was chosen to host the congress based on “the unquestionable standard of Spain’s research system and international cooperation in the field of oncology”. He also highlighted the global importance of this event as “it provides a showcase for all the latest medical advances and therapies for fighting this disease”.

Christoph Tessmar, Head of the Barcelona Convention Bureau, expressed Turisme de Barcelona’s satisfaction at the decision, which was also based on the city’s appeal and its experience in organising this kind of events. The 2017 edition will take place this September in Madrid, which also hosted the 2014 congress.
