Following the traditional start in front of the Giza Pyramids, with the Egyptian Minister of Tourism looking on, the competitors of the 2012 Pharaons Rally completed a transfer of 124 kilometers before starting their race adventure in earnest.
The first special stage, 330 kilometers of mostly unknown terrain, was the first test awaiting the racers, containing a mix of difficult navigation, fast off-road areas, sand and the first dunes. It was more than enough to open the proceedings and familiarize everyone with the Egyptian terrain. Many of the competitors described it as a difficult day, with several of the front runners quickly bunching up and running together, keeping a close eye on one another. As a part of this “game,†Joan Barreda, who started 8 minutes after the trailblazer Ullevalseter, broke away from his rivals in the final part of the stage with an unstoppable sprint. “He was really on the gas,†confirmed Jordi Viladoms, “and we were surprised by the speed of his Husqvarna on the straights. Personally I navigated very well, and I’m happy with my day.†Viladoms, the winner of the Sardegna Rally Race, was third fastest on the opening day.
It turned out to be a one-two finish for Husqvarna, with Paulo Goncalves coming in 5 minutes behind his teammate. Jakub Przygonski, in fourth place, was the fastest from Team Orlen, who also saw Jacek Czacho and Marek Dabrowski in sixth and seventh places, respectively. Joining the top 10 was the quad of Polish rider Rafal Sonik, aboard a Yamaha Raptor. He was 27 seconds ahead of his compatriot and rival Lukasz Laskawiec. Camelia Liparoti, happy with her day, was fourth of the quads, behind Frenchman Sébastien Souday.
Diocleziano Toia (Beta) and Paolo Bellini (Alfer), eleventh and twelfth respectively, were the top Italian finishers.
Schlesser suffers battery problems
“I have to give a big thank you to Patrick (Sireyjol), who came to help me when I had battery problems. This already happened to me during the Baja of Aragon ; when I shift into reverse, the engine shuts off. It’s most certainly a short circuit.†Coming off of a dune in reverse, his buggy was stuck in place, completely dead. Sireyjol didn’t hesitate for a moment to grab his equipment and bring the Sonangol Buggy back to life, where it eventually finished the stage sixth.
The incident left the way clear for Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 Racing X-Raid), who gave credit for the success to his co-pilot Andy Schulz, who navigated to perfection. “It’s been at least ten years since I’ve been to a Pharaons, but I immediately felt comfortable,†the German commented.
A surprising second fastest was Régis Delahaye (Buggy MD Racing): “I drove relaxed. We are preforming tests ahead of the Dakar, and every day we try a small technical modification,†the driver navigated by Alex Winocq, normally by the side of Eric Vigoroux.
Patrick Sireyjol (Buggy SMG) went on to finish third after his day as a ‘good Samaritan.’ “It’s normal for us Frenchman to help one another,†he stated simply at the finish.
Japanese driver Jun Mitsuhashi, navigated by Alain Guehennec, confirmed his competitiveness in the Toyota, finishing fourth ahead of the Mitsubishi of Romanian driver Costel Casuneano, navigated by Italian Maurilio Zani.
Tomorrow’s second special stage will be a long loop around the oasis of Baharija. It will be a route with magnificent views, and which requires considerable energy to cover the 347 kilometer length.
Barreda et Al-Mutawei aprono le danze
Dopo la tradizionale partenza davanti alle Piramidi di Giza e in presenza del Ministro del Turismo Egiziano, i concorrenti del Pharaons Rally 2012 sono subito entrati nel vivo della gara, dopo un trasferimento di 124 chilometri. Il settore selettivo di 330 chilometri, in gran parte inedito, è stata la prima ‘fatica’ dei piloti, con molta navigazione, fuoripista veloce, sabbia e le prime dune.
Abbastanza per iniziare in modo adeguato la gara e soprattutto per prendere familiarità con i terreni egiziani. Una giornata difficile, a detta dei piloti moto. I favoriti hanno attaccato fin dall’inizio per raggrupparsi rapidamente e continuare assieme, controllandosi l’un l’altro. In questo « gioco » Joan Barreda, partito 8 minuti dopo l’apripista Ullevalseter, ha distanziato gli avversari nella parte finale della speciale con uno sprint irresistibile. « Ha dato tanto gas » ha affermato Jordi Viladoms « E siamo rimasti stupiti dalla velocità della sua Husqvarna sul dritto. Personalmente ho navigato molto bene, e sono contento della mia giornata » ha concluso il vincitore del Sardegna Rally Race, terzo nella tappa d’apertura.
Una doppietta Husqvarna al termine della giornata, Paulo Goncalves incassa un distacco di 5 minuti dal suo compagno di squadra spagnolo. Jakub Przygonski, quarto, è stato il più veloce del Team Orlen, che ha piazzato Jacek Czacho e Marek Dabrowski rispettivamente in sesta e settima posizione.
Nella top 10 si è inserito un quad, quello del polacco Rafal Sonik su Yamaha Raptor. Precede il suo compatriota e avversario Lukasz Laskawiec per 27 secondi. Camelia Liparoti, soddisfatta della sua giornata, occupa il quarto posto dietro al francese Sébastien Souday.
Diocleziano Toia (Beta) e Paolo Bellini (Alfer) rispettivamente undicesimo e dodicesimo, sono i migliori italiani al traguardo.
Schlesser privo di batteria
« E’ un grande grazie quello che rivolgo a Patrick (Sireyjol), mi è venuto in soccorso quando ho avuto un problema di batteria. Mi era già capitato alla Baja Aragon, quando innesto la retromarcia, il motore si spegne. Certamente si tratta di un corto circuito. » Scendendo in retromarcia da una duna, il suo buggy è rimasto lì, ammutolito. Sireyjol non ha esitato a prendere la cinghia per riavviare il Buggy Sonangol che ha terminato la tappa in sesta posizione.
Via libera per Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 Racing X-Raid), che deve la sua vittoria al suo copilota Andy Schulz che ha navigato alla perfezione. « Erano almeno dieci anni che non venivo al Pharaons, ma mi sono subitro trovato a mio agio » ha riconosciuto il tedesco.
Quanto a Régis Delahaye (Buggy MD Racing), si è ritrovato inaspettatamente in seconda posizione : « Ho guidato tranquillo. Stiamo effettuando test in vista della Dakar ed ogni giorno proveremo piccole modifiche tecniche. » ha affermato il pilota navigato da Alex Winocq, abitualmente al fianco di Eric Vigoroux.
Patrick Sireyjol (Buggy SMG) ha concluso terzo dopo una giornata da «buon samaritano ». « Normale che ci si dia una mano tra francesi » Ha semplicemente affermato all’arrivo.
Il giapponese Jun Mitsuhashi, navigato da Alain Guehennec si conferma pilota di valore concludendo quarto con la sua Toyota, davanti alla Mitsubishi del rumeno Costel Casuneano, navigato dall’italiano Maurilio Zani.
Domani la seconda tappa sarà una boucle attorno all’oasi di Baharija. Tappa dai panorami magnifici che richiederà tanta energia per coprire i suoi 347 chilometri di speciale.
Barreda et Al-Mutawei déclenchent les compteurs
Après le traditionnel départ donné devant les Pyramides de Giza et en présence du Ministre du Tourisme, les concurrents de la 15ème édition du Rallye des Pharaons se sont de suite mis dans le vif du sujet, une fois les 124 km de liaison couverts.
Le secteur sélectif long de 330 km a emprunté un tout nouveau parcours, plus au Nord-Ouest du Caire en direction du lac Moghra… Beaucoup de navigation d’entrée de jeu, du hors piste roulant, du sable, de la dunette… de quoi se mettre en jambe gentiment et surtout de se familiariser avec la spécificité des terrains égyptiens…
Une journée difficile aux dires des pilotes moto. Les favoris ont cravaché dès le départ afin de se regrouper rapidement et de rouler ensemble pour s’épier et jauger les chances de chacun. A ce jeu, Joan Barreda parti 8 minutes après l’ouvreur, Pal Ullevalseter a sorti son épingle du jeu en larguant ses camarades à quelques kilomètres du but pour terminer l’étape tel un sprinter ! « Il a mis ‘gaz’ » raconte Jordi Viladoms « et nous sommes restés ébahis par la vitesse de pointe de son Husqvarna en ligne droite. Personnellement, j’ai réalisé une navigation parfaite et ne suit pas mécontent de ma journée » avoue le vainqueur du récent rallye de Sardaigne, troisième de l’étape d’ouverture.
Un doublé Husqvarna au terme de la journée, Paulo Gonzalves encaisse cinq minutes sur son équipier espagnol, vainqueur de l’étape. Jakub Przygonski 4ème fut le plus rapide du Orlen Team, Jacek Czachor et Marek Dabrowski occupent respectivement les 6ème et 7ème place.
Dans le ‘top 00’ s’est inséré un Quad, celui du redoutable Polonais, Rafal Sonik sur Yamaha Raptor. Il précède son compatriote Lukasz Laskawiec pour 27 secondes. Camelia Liparoti (Yamaha Raptor) satisfaite de sa journée occupe la quatrième place après le français Sébastien Souday.
Toia Diocleziano (Beta) et Paolo Bellini (Alfer) classés respectivement 11ème et 12ème se démarquent, ce sont les deux premiers italiens de l’imposante colonie.
Schlesser privé de batterie
« C’est un grand merci que j’adresse à Patrick (Sireyjol), il est venu me secourir alors que je vivais un problème de batterie. Cela m’est déjà arrivé à la Baja en Aragon, dès que j’enclenche la marche arrière, le moteur s’arrête net. Un court-circuit certainement… » Alors que Schlesser descendait en marche arrière une petite dune pour mieux l’appréhender, à son pied, le Buggy y restait. Arrivé rapidement sur l’infortuné concepteur-pilote, Patrick sortait la sangle et le tirait pour relancer le Buggy Sonangol qui termine le sprint en 6ème position.
Si, Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 Racing X-Rad) du team Faaza l’emporte, il le doit à son navigateur Andy Schulz qui a réalisé une parfaite navigation. « Je ne suis pas venu depuis dix ans sur les Pharaons, je m’y suis de suite repéré… » reconnaît l’allemand.
Quant à Régis Delahaye (Buggy MD Racing), il se retrouve 2ème au soir de l’étape 1 en avouant : « J’ai roulé tranquille. Nous effectuons des tests en prévision du Dakar et chaque jour essayons de petits choix techniques qui vont dans le bon sens » assure le pilote navigué par Alex Winocq, habituellement dans le baquet de droite de Eric Vigouroux.
Patrick Sireyjol (Buggy SMG) termine troisième après avoir joué au Saint-Bernard « normal que nous nous serions les coudes entre français » a-t’il simplement commenté alors qu’à ses trousses, le Japonais Jun Mitsuhashi navigué par Alain Guehennec montre déjà le bout du nez de son Toyota en finissant 4ème devant le Mitsubishi du Roumain, Costel Casuneanu.
Demain, étape 2 en boucle autour de Tibniya. Une journée qui demandera de l’énergie sur les 347 km de spéciale.
