Charouz Racing System keeps extending its positive streak in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 season. While at Paul Ricard the point finish came at the end of a very difficult weekend, at Hungaroring the Czech squad scored two spectacular podiums with Enzo Fittipaldi, able to finish P3 in the Sprint Race and P2 in the Feature Race.
The Brazilian started on the right foot since Friday, finding a very great speed that allowed him to clinch P9 in both Free Practice and Qualifying. With the reverse grid, Enzo started from the first row in Saturday’s Sprint Race and got the lead at Turn 1, but a lockup at Turn 2 got him to slide back in P3, a position that he’s been able to defend up until the chequered flag.
On Sunday, he started from the fifth row and climbed positions right from the first laps. Then, also thanks to a very good strategy by the team, he found himself in the ideal position and with a really strong pace in the second half of the race, conquering a magnificent second place and the fifth podium finish of the season.
The weekend has been a bit more complicated for Cem Bölükbasi, who struggled with tyres temperatures and couldn’t find the right window also because of the ever changing weather conditions. The Turkish rookie was 16th in Qualifying on a track where it’s particularly difficult to overtake and, despite the good potential, ended both races out of the points but
Thanks to this really strong weekend, Fittipaldi heads into the August break fourth in the Driver Standings with 100 points, while Charouz Racing System is P7 in the Teams Standings. The next challenge will be the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where Round 11 will take place on 26-28 August.
Antonín Charouz, team owner
“We were looking for a good weekend to get into the August break with big reasons to smile and that’s exactly what we did! I’m really happy for Enzo and for the team, they’ve been very competitive for the whole weekend and his fourth place in the championship is well deserved. Maybe it could have been even better without that small mistake in the Sprint Race, but overall we’re all really satisfied with these two podiums. Too bad that we couldn’t also celebrate Cem’s first points but he’s improving every race and it’s just a matter of time. Now it’s time for some rest and to prepare for Spa, which is one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. I really can’t wait!”.
“What a weekend! I was very satisfied since Qualifying and I was thrilled by winning 3rd place in the Sprint Race, even though I could have done even better. Before the start of the Feature Race I knew I had a very strong pace to finish at the top and we got it done! The pace was just so fast, I overtook some cars at the start and then we had a good strategy and a good pit-stop. I’m very happy, we maximized the results and we scored a lot of important points, let’s keep pushing to come back even stronger at Spa!”.
“I was quite happy after quali because the pace looked promising, but in the Sprint Race the tyres weren’t in the right operating window and we couldn’t get advantage of our speed. Despite missing again on the points, Sunday’s was actually one of my best races of the season so far, with tyre management done right and a good strategy. I must say that in the end we’re going into summer break on a high, can’t wait for Spa”.
