Just one step to the Pyramids

Fortunately Pharaons temperatures decreased a bit, so the rally’s fourth stage, a loop starting and arriving in Bahariya Oasis, has been enjoyable for everybody apart from motorbike leader, Juan Carlos Salvatierra, who fell down by the end of special stage for having relaxed too much.

Bolivian seriously damaged his Speedbrain, loosing fork oil and radiator water. Fortunately, both Cardona and Sonik stopped to get water from their camel-back, so Salvatierra could finish the stage. Today 315 km stage winner has been Nicolas Cardona with an advantage of three minutes on Rafal Sonik’s quad and of ten minutes on Salvatierra.

Salvatierra still maintains competition leadership , but his advantage has now reduced to 21 minutes. Stefano Chiussi is third overall, but the surprising Italian fell down and dislocated his shoulder. He only has a three minutes advantage on Sonik that tomorrow will have the concrete opportunity to grab the podium.

For what concerns cars, it’s always interesting the fight between Nasser Al Attiyha who tries to attack and Yazeed Al Rajhi that does not seem to cede not even a millimeter. Even today Saudi pilot riding Toyota, was the fastest even if just for 44 seconds on Qatar driver.
Moreover, he still also has in general ranking eight minutes advantage on Al Attiyah, a consistent advantage but not so strong to let him sleep soundly until Pyramids.

Third today Dutch Erik Van Loon, who’s fighting for podium with Marek Dabrowski. Dutch regained nine minutes on Polish that has now an advantage of ten minutes.
Problems again today for Russian Vladimir Vasilyev: World Cup leader got stuck in the sand. Then he had turbo problems and reached the finish line almost one hour after Al Rajhi.

Pharaons final act tomorrow will bring caravan to Giza Pyramids where 2014 winners will be crowned. There will be a special stage of 326 km before the final transfer in Egyptian capital.

INTERVIEWS
Yazeed al Rajhi: “I rode as fast as possible as I did not want to give Nasser the hope to reach me.
If we do not make any mistake tomorrow, we’ll have the opportunity of winning: if Nasser would reach us, it will be sufficient to control him.

Nasser Al Attiyah: “Stage was good, we did not made any navigation mistake but Yazeed today was faster, maybe because we had to open the track. Today stage was very beautiful again, with sand, stones and very fast parts. Tomorrow we’ll have the last 300 km, everything can still happen and we’ll make our best to get it.”

Marek Dabrowski: “Today I’ve tried to do my best, but we collected a big delay from Van Loon . It seemed to be well done, but chronometer says the opposite.”

Van Loon: “I’m happy about today result, track was very fast with some slow stretches, beautiful landscapes and during the last 50 km. it seemed to be a WRC stage.
It has been hard for the body with lots of jumps, we landed on the nose twice.
It’s the second competition with Mini and we still have to become totally confident with the car.”

Juan Carlos Salvatierra: “A very exciting stage really suffered in its final part. I was riding well but at km 240 I was too relaxed and I fell down. I was not going fast but bike is seriously damaged. Radiator was loosing water and I was seriously worried. I stopped every 20 km and Cardona and Sonik gave me water. Tomorrow I will not open the track, so I just have to control.”

Nicolas Cardona: “Today was a technical stage with some difficult series of dunes, with even some cut dunes, where I took some risks. Even navigation was not easy. I found Salvatierra in the last dunes and I stopped to give him water, then I had a relaxed riding, and opened the track in the final. Without first day penalty, it would have been an amusing competition.”

Rafael Eraso: “We are trying each day to safeguard bike and body even because I’m still recovering from Dakar hand injury. I was very tired at km 230 and I stopped to have an analgesic. After that I felt better and I could get my rhythm again. I hope not to have problems tomorrow and to get to Pyramids.”

Stefano Chiussi: “Ten km by the arrival, I lost concentration for a moment, I bumped a stone, and I fell down. I dislocated my shoulder but fortunately, Stefano Turchi stopped and helped me to relocate it again. I made the last kilometers suffering a terrible pain. I think that third place fight is now on Sonik favor, I have just three minutes of advantage on him, and tomorrow it will be almost a miracle for me to finish the competition.”

Ancora un passo per le Piramidi

BAHARIYA – Fortunatamente le temperature del Pharaons sono un po’ diminuite, così la quarta giornata del rally, una boucle con partenza e arrivo all’Oasi di Bahariya, è stata piacevole per tutti, non del tutto per il leader della categoria moto, Juan Carlos Salvatierra, caduto verso fine speciale per essersi troppo rilassato.

Il boliviano ha danneggiato seriamente la sua Speedbrain, perdendo l’olio della forcella e l’acqua del radiatore. Per sua fortuna sia Cardona che Sonik si sono fermati a travasare acqua dal loro camel-back, così Salvatierra ha potuto concludere la tappa. Vincitore di oggi nella speciale di 315 chilometri è stato così Nicolas Cardona che ha preceduto di tre minuti il quad di Rafal Sonik e di 10 Salvatierra.

Quest’ultimo mantiene la leadership della gara, con un vantaggio che si è ridotto a 21 minuti. Terzo in generale è Stefano Chiussi, ma il sorprendente italiano è anch’egli caduto lussandosi una spalla. Solo tre minuti il suo vantaggio su Sonik che domani ha la concreta possibilità di agguantare il podio.

Tra le auto è sempre interessante la battaglia tra Nasser Al Attiyha che cerca di attaccare e Yazeed Al Rajhi che non sembra cedere di un millimetro. Anche oggi il saudita al volante della Toyota è stato il più veloce, per solo 44 secondi sul qatarino. In generale ha ancora otto minuti di vantaggio su Al Attiyah, vantaggio consistente, ma non tanto per dormire sonni tranquilli fino alle Piramidi.

Terzo di giornata è stato l’olandese Erik Van Loon, che sta lottando per il podio con Marek Dabrowski. L’olandese ha recuperato nove minuti sul polacco che ora lo precede di 10 minuti.
Ancora problemi oggi per il russo Vladimir Vasilyev: il leader della Coppa del Mondo è rimasto insabbiato, poi ha avuto problemi al turbo, arrivando al traguardo quasi un’ora dopo Al Rajhi.

Domani l’atto finale del Pharaons porterà la carovana al cospetto delle Piramidi di Giza, dove saranno incoronati i vincitori 2014. In programma una prova speciale di 326 chilometri prima del trasferimento finale nella capitale egiziana.

INTERVISTE

Yazeed al Rajhi: “Sono andato più veloce possibile perché non volevo dare a Nasser neppure la più piccola speranza di raggiungermi. Se non commettiamo errori domani avremo la possibilità di vincere: se Nasser ci dovesse raggiungere ci basta controllarlo.”

Nasser Al Attiyah: “La tappa è andata bene, non abbiamo commesso nessun errore di navigazione, ma oggi Yazeed è andato più forte, forse perché abbiamo dovuto aprire la pista. Anche oggi una tappa molto bella, con sabbia, rocce e tratti molto veloci. Domani ci aspettano gli ultimi 300 chilometri, tutto può ancora succedere e daremo il massimo per provarci.”

Marek Dabrowski: “Oggi ho provato a dare il massimo ma abbiamo perso molto tempo da Van Loon . Mi sembrava di essere andato bene, ma il cronometro dice il contrario.”

Erik Van Loon: “Sono contento del risultato odierno, la pista era molto veloce con alcuni tratti lenti, bellissimi paesaggi e negli ultimi 50 km sembrava una tappa di WRC. E’ stata dura per il fisico con tanti salti: due volte siamo arrivati sul “naso” della macchina. E’ la seconda gara con la mini e dobbiamo ancora prendere totale confidenza con la macchina.”

Juan Carlos Salvatierra: “Una tappa molto emozionante e di sofferenza nel finale. Stavo guidando bene ma al km 240 andavo troppo rilassato e sono caduto. Non ero veloce ma la moto si è danneggiata seriamente. Il radiatore perdeva acqua ed ero preoccupato. Ogni 20 km mi fermavo e Cardona e Sonik mi hanno dato acqua. Domani non parto avanti quindi devo solo controllare.”

Nicolas Cardona: “Ogg iera una tappa tecnica con alcuni difficili cordoni di dune, alcune tagliate dove ho rischiato un po’. Anche la navigazione non era semplice. Ho trovato Salvatierra nelle ultime dune e mi sono fermato per dargli acqua, poi sono andato tranquillo aprendo la pista nel finale. Peccato per la penalità del primo giorno, sarebbe stata una gara divertente.”

Rafael Eraso: “Stiamo cercando ogni giorno di salvaguardare moto e fisico, anche perché sto ancora recuperndo la lesione della mano della Dakar. Al km 230 ero molto stanco e mi sono fermato per prendere un antidolorifico. Dopo mi sono sentito meglio e ho potuto riprendere il ritmo. Speriamo domani di non avere problemi e arrivare alle Piramidi.”

Stefano Chiussi: “A dieci chilometri dalla fine mi sono distratto un attimo, ho urtato una pietra e sono caduto. Mi è uscita la spalla ma per fortuna Stefano Turchi si è fermato e mi ha aiutato e rimetterla in sede. Ho fatto gli ultimi chilometri con un dolore lancinante. Penso che la lotta per il terzo posto sia ormai a favore di Sonik, ho solo tre minuti di vantaggio su di lui e domani per me sarà già un miracolo terminare la gara.”
