Karen Putzer previews the women’s downhill competition in PyeongChang

Who do you think are among the top favorites for the women’s downhill competition?

Lindsey Vonn and Sofia Goggia are for sure the top favorites for the women’s downhill.

Tina Weirather is also quite good. During her interviews, she said that she can be good on the flat parts. This winter, she was usually fast when it was a little steeper. But she can be really good on this slope too.

Lindsey Vonn failed to medal in Super-G. She might be very frustrated. How do you assess her chances?
Yes, Lindsey Vonn made a big mistake in the Super G. She doesn’t seem very frustrated, because she is a really good professional and she knows how to handle it. Today, during the trainings, she skied very well and she stand up before the finish. So, she can be even faster. This downhill turns a lot and she usually likes when it’s more faster and a little bit straighter, but this snow is good for her.

Italian skier Sofia Goggia is the current leader of the Women’s World Cup downhill. Do you think she could win the gold medal?
Sofia Goggia is really good on this slope because she won the pre-Olympics race last year. Also, she is really focused on the downhill and was not very disappointed about her Giant Slalom and Super G, because she knows that the downhill will be her race. She also did 3 training runs and that’s good for her because she risked a lot and she struggled. In downhill, after 3 training runs, you should not do any more mistakes, so that can help her a lot.

For sure, it will be a battle between Vonn and Goggia. Vonn is more experienced. Sofia Goggia will fight for the gold medal, but I think it will be really tough because if she Lindsey Von would not have done this mistake she would have won the gold medal in Super G.

Sofia Goggia takes more risks than Lindsey but I’m not sure it will be enough for a gold medal. She will win a medal for sure, but difficult to say which one.

Snowboarder Ester Ledecka unexpectedly won the Super-G. Can we expect an outsider for the downhill competition too?

Yes, there could be outsiders for the Super G competition because today all the athletes said that’s is a really unusual downhill. Indeed, the speed is very low, it turns a lot and the snow is really aggressive.

Swiss skier Michelle Gisin is a good outsider. She can be really fast on this kind of track. Also, her sister Dominique Gisin, who won the donwhill in Sotchi, is here and coaches her.

Austrian Cornelia Huetter is a really good skier, but she seems to have some problems.

And last, Viktoria Rebensburg can be a good outsider.
