The MARMOLADA GRANDE GUERRA 3000 m museum is located at the centre of the Sacred Monumental Area in Punta Serauta, established under law number 5/12/1975 n. 719, code D.L. 29/10/1922 n.1386, signed into law on 16/6/1927 n.983 and entrusted to the guardianship of the General Commission in Honour of the War Fallen – Commissariato Generale Onoranze Caduti in Guerra (Defence Ministry) to remember and honour the Men who fought on the Marmolada during the First World War.
Italian soldiers occupied Forcella Serauta on April 30th, 1916, building a fortified outpost in, on and around the rocky massif of Punta Serauta. The military encampment was made up of command posts, observatories, emplacements, infirmaries, barracks, trenches and walkways that can be visited in the summer months.
The funicular lift stops at the intermediate station of Serauta, where the MARMOLADA GRANDE GUERRA 3000 museum is located. It’s a short descent to the underlying forcella Serauta, where there is an information placard with a map of the route, which winds along a narrow trail on the south-east face of the Punta Serauta. The trail is well marked and maintained, and there is also a metal safety cable along the most narrow and exposed parts. Along the walkways you can see the caves that used to house the command post, the observatory, the infirmary and the cableway station.
You can also go all the way up to the crest to reach a narrow rocky outcrop and continue on to a wide cave beyond which, through a window in the rock, there is access to the via Ferrata Eterna, a cabled climb open only to expert and well equipped climbers.
The visit to the Sacred Monumental Area of Punta Serauta takes about 2 hours; admission to the route is free and the excursion does not present any particular challenges; however the entire rocky trail and some of the more exposed points are equipped with metal safety cables.
Access the areas outside of the funicular stations at your own risk. Dress appropriately and bring the necessary equipment.
