The young Moroccan driver Suleiman Zanfari surprised everyone by winning the Swedish OK-Junior Championship at Kristianstad on the last weekend of July.
The meeting had started with average results in Qualifying, but Suleiman and his team were able to recover the situation in the rain in the Prefinal before concluding with another victory after a hard fight in the dry Final.
There was high emotion on Sunday 28th July at the Åsum Ring when Suleiman Zanfari crossed the finish line of the OK-Junior Final. It must be said that the young Moroccan hopeful was not one of the favourites on the entry list for the Swedish Championship. His incredible recovery on a very slippery track in the Prefinal, and the confirmation of his talent during a long battle in the Final, earned him the applause of the public and the congratulations of the experts. Faced with the most experienced Swedish drivers in international competition, Suleiman showed great strength of character to win the Swedish title with two consecutive wins in the Finals.
A difficult start to the meeting
On a track he knows and appreciates, Suleiman did not display his usual level of performance, that had led up to his 8th position in the Final position in the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior in June. 10th in Timed Practice among the 28 participants in the competition, he was struggling with a deficit of about 3 tenths of a lap without finding a solution in the Qualifying Heats. He managed to gain three places on Saturday night at the wheel of his Tony Kart / Vortex from the Swedish team Ward Racing.
Technical challenge before the finals
Frustrated by the average results of their driver, his coach Davide Foré and mechanic Gabriele Bassetta changed their approach and reconsidered the set-up of his machine. Their reflection bore fruit and Suleiman’s kart found a new equilibrium as the Finals approached, with the title to be decided on the raw result of the Final.
Celebration in the rain in the Prefinal
The Prefinal was held on a wet track with very limited grip. Suleiman started aggressively and was already 4th after the first corner. He progressed steadily over the course of the laps and was fighting against one of the favourites, Philip Victorsson, with the two drivers passing over and over again. Suleiman was the winner of this incredible fight which stunned the observers.
Brilliant dry confirmation
Most of his opponents thought Suleiman had been lucky in the rain, but would be less comfortable once the track was dry again for the Final. Thanks to the work of his team, however, Suleiman had strong prospects of surprising them. The fight was again intense and undecided until the finish. Early in the race, Casper Jansson and William Siverholm attacked and he found himself 3rd..Extremely determined, Suleiman kept up the fight and recovered the lead at halfway. He then had to keep calm to resist Wernersson’s threat right behind him. Suleiman remained focused, made no mistakes and crossed the finish line as a major winner to clinch his first Junior title.
“It’s a great satisfaction for me to put my name on the Swedish Championship trophy,” said the young OCK driver. “It is of course surprising to see a Moroccan win in Sweden, but I think I deserve it. I dedicate my first international title to His Majesty Mohamed VI, king of Morocco and to the Moroccan people. After my victory, the warm reaction of the Swedes touched me deeply, especially within the team. I would like to thank Joakim Ward for the quality of his team’s work as well as Gabriele Bassetta, my mechanic, who made the right decisions for the Final stages in close collaboration with Davide Foré”.
“The better I get to know Suleiman, the more he surprises me!”, confided Davide Foré. “We had to deal with some poor performances since the last European meeting at Le Mans and it was certainly not easy for him to experience. I always said that the driver was not the cause. At Kristianstad, we were able to provide a technical answer along with Gabriele Bassetta just before the Final stages.Thanks to a more competitive kart, Suleiman was able to mobilise against the top Swedish specialists. He performed remarkably well in the rain without ever making mistakes despite pressure from his rivals. In the Final, he kept his cool to apply the right strategy and stay ahead of a formidable opponent. I am very happy with his performance, and I am not the only one!”
Suleiman will now travel to Belgium and the Genk circuit to race in the DKM before starting his preparation for the World Championship to be held in Finland in early September at Alahärmä.
Suleiman Zanfari, 2019 svensk OK juniormästare
Den unga marockanska föraren Suleiman Zanfari förvånade alla genom att vinna det svenska OK juniormästerskapet på Kristianstad den sista helgen i juli. Mötet började med genomsnittliga resultat i kvalet, men Suleiman och hans team kunde återhämta situationen i regnet i loppet före finalen innan de avslutade med ytterligare en seger efter en hård kamp i den torra finalen.
Det var starka känslor på söndagen 28 juli vid Åsumringen när Suleiman Zanfari passerade mållinjen i OK-juniorfinalen. Det måste nämnas att den unga marockanen inte var en av favoriterna på startlistan till det svenska mästerskapet. Hans otroliga återhämtning på ett mycket halt spår i loppet före finalen, och bekräftelsen av hans talang under en lång strid i finalen, gav honom publikens applåder och gratulationerna som experterna. Han mötte de mest erfarna svenska förarna i den internationella tävlingen, och Suleiman visade upp både styrka och karaktär för att vina den svenska titeln med två segrar i följd i finalen.
En tuff start till mötet
På en bana som han känner till och tycker om, visade inte Suleiman sin vanliga prestationsnivå, som ledde till hans 8:e plats i slutpositionen i FIA Karting European Championship – Junior i juni. 10:a i tidsövningen bland de 28 deltagarna i tävlingen, kämpade han med ett underskott på cirka 3 tiondelar av varvet utan att hitta en lösning i de kvalificierande loppen. Han lyckades att ta in tre platser under lördagskvällen med sin Tony Kart / Wortex från Svenska teamets Ward Racing.
Teknisk utveckling före finalerna
Frustrerad av sina förares genomsnittliga resultat, ändrade hans tränare David Foré och mekaniker Gabriella Bassetta hur de förberedde hans maskin. Deras reflektion bar frukt och Suleimans kart hittade en ny jämvikt när finalen närmade sig, med titeln som skulle avgöras genom endast finalens resultat.
Gjorde bra ifrån sig i regnet i loppet före finalen
Loppet före finalen hölls på en våt bana med begränsat grepp. Suleiman började aggressivt och var redan på 4:e plats efter första hörnet. Han fortsatte stadigt under varvets lopp och kämpade mot en av favoriterna, Philip Victorsson, med de två förarna som passerade varandra i omgångar. Suleiman var vinnare av denna otroliga strid som trollband åskådarna.
Briljant torr bekräftelse
De flesta av hans motståndare ansåg att Suleiman hade haft tur i regnet, men att han skulle vara mindre bekväm när banan var torr igen inför finalen. Men tack vare hans teams arbete hade Suleiman starka möjligheter att överraska dem. Striden var igen intensiv och avgjordes inte fören slutet. Tidigt i loppet attackerade Casper Jansson och William Siverholm och han befann sig på 3:e plats. Extremt beslutsam fortsatte Suleiman kampen och tog tillbaka ledningen halvvägs. Därefter höll han sig lugn för att motstå Wernersson’s hot mot honom bakifrån. Suleiman förblev fokuserad, gjorde inga misstag och korsade mållinjen som en stor vinnare för att få sin första Junior titel.
“Det är en stor tillfredsställelse för mig att sätta mitt namn på Sveriges mästerskaprofé,” sa den unga OCK föraren. “Det är så klart överaskande att se en Marockan i sverige, men jag tycker att jag förtjänar det. Jag dedikerar min första internationella titel till Hans Majestät Mohamed VI, kung av Marocko och till det marockanska folket. Efter min seger, berörde den varma reaktionen av det svenska folket mig djupt, speciellt inom teamet. Jag vill tacka Joakim Ward för kvaliteten på hans team och Gabriele Bassetta, min mekaniker, som fattade rätt beslut inför finalstegen i nära samarbete med Davide Foré”.
“Desto bättre jag lär känna Suleiman desto mer överraskar han mig” fortsatte Davide Foré. “Vi var tvungna att hantera några dåliga resultat sedan det senaste europeiska mötet i Le Mans, och det var verkligen inte lätt för honom att uppleva det. Jag sa alltid att föraren inte var orsaken. På Kristianstad kunde vi ge ett tekniskt svar tillsammans med Gabriele Bassetta strax före finalstegen. Tack vare en mer konkurrenskraftig kart kunde Suleiman mobilisera sigm ot de bästa svenska specialisterna. Han presterade anmärkningsvärt bra i regnet utan att någonsin göra misstag trots press från sina rivaler. I finalen höll han sig kall nog för att tillämpa rätt strategi och ligga före en formidabel motståndare. Jag är väldigt glad över hans prestanda, och jag är inte den enda som är det!”
Suleiman reser nu till Belgien och Genk banan för att tävla i DKM innan han börjar sin förberedelse för världsmästerskapet som hålls i Finland i början av september i Alahärmä.

Le jeune pilote marocain Suleiman Zanfari a créé la surprise en remportant le titre de Champion de Suède OK-Junior sur le circuit de Kristianstad durant le dernier week-end de juillet. Le meeting avait pourtant commencé avec des résultats moyens en qualification, mais Suleiman et son équipe ont su redresser la situation sous la pluie de la préfinale avant de conclure par une nouvelle victoire acquise de haute lutte sur le sec en finale.
L’émotion était grande dimanche 28 juillet sur l’Åsum Ring quand Suleiman Zanfari a franchi en vainqueur la ligne d’arrivée de la finale OK-Junior. Il faut dire que le jeune espoir du Maroc ne faisait pas partie des favoris sur la liste des engagés du Championnat de Suède. Son incroyable remontée victorieuse sur une piste très glissante lors de la préfinale, puis la confirmation de son talent lors d’une longue bataille en finale lui ont valu les applaudissements du public et les félicitations des connaisseurs. Face aux meilleurs pilotes suédois aguerris en compétition internationale, Suleiman a fait preuve d’une grande force de caractère pour remporter le titre de Champion de Suède en réalisant deux exploits consécutifs lors des phases finales.
Un début de meeting difficile
Sur un tracé qu’il connaît et apprécie, Suleiman n’affichait pas son niveau de performance habituel, celui qui l’avait mené jusqu’à la 8e position finale lors du Championnat d’Europe FIA Karting – Junior en juin dernier. 10e des essais chronométrés parmi les 28 participants de la compétition, il se battait avec un déficit de l’ordre de 3 dixièmes au tour sans parvenir à trouver de solution au cours des manches qualificatives. Il réussissait malgré tout à regagner 3 places samedi soir au volant de son Tony Kart/Vortex de l’équipe suédoise Ward Racing.
Remise en question technique avant les phases finales
Frustrés par les résultats moyens de leur pilote, son coach Davide Foré et son mécanicien Gabriele Bassetta changeaient leur fusil d’épaule et reconsidéraient le set-up de sa machine. Leur réflexion portait ses fruits et le kart de Suleiman retrouvait un nouvel équilibre à l’approche des courses décisives, le titre devant se jouer sur le résultat brut de la finale.
Festival sous la pluie en préfinale
La préfinale se déroulait sur une piste mouillée à l’adhérence très limitée. Suleiman partait le couteau entre les dents et pointait déjà 4e après le premier virage. Il progressait constamment au fil des tours et affrontait longuement un des favoris, Philip Victorsson, les deux pilotes se dépassant à plusieurs reprises. Suleiman sortait vainqueur de cette bagarre incroyable qui avait médusé les observateurs.
Brillante confirmation sur le sec
La plupart de ses adversaires pensaient que Suleiman avait été chanceux sous la pluie, mais qu’il serait moins à l’aise une fois la piste redevenue sèche pour la finale. Grâce au travail de son équipe, Suleiman disposait cependant de solides atouts pour les détromper. La lutte s’avérait encore fois fois très sévère et indécise jusqu’à l’arrivée. En début de course, Casper Jansson, puis William Siverholm l’attaquaient et il se retrouvait 3e. Très déterminé, Suleiman ne baissait jamais les bras et récupérait la 1re place à mi-parcours. Il devait ensuite garder son calme pour résister à la menace de Wernersson juste derrière lui. Suleiman restait concentré, ne commettait aucune erreur et franchissait la ligne d’arrivée en grand vainqueur pour décrocher son premier titre Junior.
« C’est une grande satisfaction pour moi d’inscrire mon nom au palmarès du Championnat de Suède », déclarait le jeune pilote du club OCK. « Il est bien sûr étonnant de voir un Marocain s’imposer en Suède, mais je pense l’avoir largement mérité. Je dédie ce premier titre international à Sa Majesté Mohamed VI, roi du Maroc et au peuple marocain. Après ma victoire, la réaction chaleureuse des Suédois m’a profondément touché, notamment au sein de l’équipe. Je tiens à remercier Joakim Ward pour la qualité du travail de son team ainsi que Gabriele Bassetta, mon mécanicien, qui a su prendre les bonnes décisions pour les phases finales en étroite collaboration avec Davide Foré ».
« Plus je connais Suleiman et plus il m’étonne ! », confiait Davide Foré. « Nous avons dû faire face à quelques contre-performances depuis le dernier rendez-vous européen au Mans et ce n’était sans douta pas facile à vivre pour lui. J’ai toujours dit que le pilote n’en était pas la cause. À Kristianstad, nous avons pu apporter une réponse technique avec Gabriele Bassetta, juste avant les phases finales. Grâce à un kart plus compétitif, Suleiman a pu concrétiser face aux meilleurs spécialistes suédois. Il s’est remarquablement bien comporté sous la pluie sans jamais commettre d’erreur malgré la pression de ses adversaires. Lors de la finale, il a conservé tout son sang-froid pour appliquer la bonne stratégie et rester en tête face à un rival redoutable. Je suis très content de sa prestation, et je ne suis pas le seul ! »
Suleiman va maintenant mettre le cap sur la Belgique et la piste de Genk dans le cadre du DKM avant de débuter sa préparation pour le Championnat du Monde qui se déroulera en Finlande à Alahärmä début septembre.
