The young Jamaican go-kart champion Alex Powell has distinguished himself throughout the five meetings of the famous Italian Championship of 2019.
After another podium at the beginning of September at the closing event at Val Vibrata, the Mercedes F1 Junior Team protégé concluded his Championship with a convincing 3rd position overall in the 60 Mini category. With the Energy Corse team, Alex is now focused on the last major events of the season, with a major step to be taken very soon for the motorsport hopeful.
A regular presence in the top three in Italy
In 2019, no less than 70 drivers were classified in the ACI Karting Italian Championship. Among them, Alex Powell scored eight top six finishes in 10 races, including four podiums and two victories. At each race, the young Jamaican applied the instructions of his team and his coach Mike Wilson, the most successful karting driver ever with six world titles to his credit. “Alex was quick in all conditions,” he said. “Even when the weather turned to rain at Adria at the end of July, Alex remained steady and scored important points in the overall standings. He is very attentive, determined and effective. He has won several Qualifying Heats in this championship, as well as Finals, but I think he can be even more combative because it is important to be respected in the pack, if he wants to continue his career in the high-level international categories in the best conditions.”
In the end, Alex Powell draws a very positive assessment of his Italian campaign, in addition to having gained valuable experience on circuits that he will undoubtedly visit again very soon. The winner of a race at Castelletto at the start of the season and on the podium a month later in Siena, he again won at Sarno at the beginning of July. Ranked 6th in the two races at Adria on a wet track, Alex finished in style at Val Vibrata in September with a remarkable recovery to 3rd position. This is the same place he obtained in the final classification of the Italian Championship. Well done!
12 years old: The age for Juniors!
For drivers in the Mini category, the International Rok Cup Final from 9th to 12th October is a very important event and Alex Powell has already started his preparation of this great event. He also participated in a Rotax Challenge event in New Jersey, USA. He led the race until a collision forced him to give up.
At the end of the season, while Alex has just turned 12 on 18th September, it will be time to discover the Junior category before a highly anticipated 2020 season. In Junior there are two major official FIA Karting competitions, the European Championship and the World Championship, which have seen all the great Formula 1 drivers compete in recent years. A highly anticipated challenge for the well-motivated Jamaican driver!
La série de podiums continue pour Alex Powell
Le jeune champion de karting Jamaïcain Alex Powell s’est illustré tout au long des cinq meetings que comptait le réputé Championnat d’Italie 2019. Après un nouveau podium décroché au début du mois de septembre lors de l’épreuve de clôture à Val Vibrata, le protégé du Mercedes F1 Junior Team a conclu son Championnat par une probante 3e position au classement général dans la catégorie 60 Mini. Avec l’équipe Energy Corse, Alex est aujourd’hui concentré sur les derniers grands rendez-vous de la saison, avec un important palier à franchir très prochainement pour cet espoir du sport automobile.
Une présence régulière dans le top-3 en Italie
En 2019, pas moins de 70 pilotes ont été classés au Championnat d’Italie ACI Karting. Parmi eux, Alex Powell a comptabilisé 8 top-6 en 10 courses, dont 4 podiums et 2 victoires. A chaque course, le jeune Jamaïcain a su appliquer les consignes de son équipe et de son coach Mike Wilson, le plus titré des pilotes de karting avec 6 titres mondiaux à son actif. “Alex s’est montré rapide dans toutes les conditions,” a confirmé ce dernier. “Même lorsque le temps a tourné à la pluie à Adria fin juillet, Alex est resté régulier et a marqué des points importants au classement général. Il est très à l’écoute, déterminé et performant. Il a gagné plusieurs manches de qualification dans ce championnat, ainsi que des finales, mais je pense qu’il peut se montrer encore plus combatif car il est important de se faire respecter dans le peloton, s’il veut poursuivre son parcours dans les catégories internationales de haut niveau dans les meilleures conditions.”
Au final, Alex Powell tire un bilan très positif de sa campagne italienne, en plus d’avoir acquis une précieuse expérience sur des circuits qu’il sera sans doute amené à retrouver très prochainement. Vainqueur d’une course à Castelletto en ouverture de la saison et sur le podium un mois plus tard à Sienne, il s’est à nouveau imposé à Sarno début juillet. Classé 6e des deux courses disputées à Adria sur une piste détrempée, Alex a fini en beauté à Val Vibrata avec une remontée remarquée en 3e position en septembre. C’est cette même place qu’il a obtenue au classement final du Championnat d’Italie. Bravo !
12 ans: L’âge du Junior !
Pour les pilotes de la catégorie Mini, la Finale Internationale de la “Rok Cup” programmée du 9 au 12 octobre reste une épreuve très importante et Alex Powell a d’ores et déjà entamé la préparation de ce grand événement. Il a également participé à une épreuve du Challenge Rotax dans le New-Jersey aux Etats-Unis. Il menait la course, lorsqu’un accrochage l’a obligé à abandonner.
En fin de saison, alors qu’Alex vient de fêter ses 12 ans le 18 septembre dernier, le temps sera venu de découvrir la catégorie Junior en prévision d’une saison 2020 très attendue. Le Junior propose notamment deux grandes compétitions officielles FIA Karting, le Championnat d’Europe et le Championnat du Monde, qui ont vu défiler tous les grands pilotes de Formule 1 de ces dernières années. Un challenge très attendu pour le très motivé pilote jamaïcain !
