The Birel ARTs of the Lissone factory’s official racing service impressed with their top performances at the Sarno circuit during the second round of the European Championship.
Alessandro Irlando in KZ and Riccardo Longhi in KZ2 positioned themselves as serious favourites in the double title race. An incident unfortunately eliminated Irlando as he began his ultimate run to the European crown, while Longhi, making a great comeback, just missed the win in the Final clash.
“That’s racing, we all know it’s hard and sometimes unfair, but it’s the passion we all share within Birel ART since its inception 60 years ago,” said Luca Filini, the Racing Team manager. “In the evening at Sarno, we have mixed feelings. Of course, we have not yet achieved our goal of victory, and it is always annoying. But we were very good performers and that pushes us to continue our work every day with more motivation. The goal is now to do everything possible to shine during the World Championship.”
Among the multiple reasons for satisfaction at Birel ART, its presence at the European peak of the gearbox categories is particularly pleasing. In the KZ category, which brings together the best drivers in the world, the rise of Alessandro Irlando since the beginning of the season has been noticed.
Irlando so close to the goal
After setting the 2nd fastest time in Qualifying, Irlando improved steadily, finishing his heats with a victory and two fastest laps. Well placed on the front row of the start line of the Final, Alessandro had an undeniable advantage in front of his main rivals for the title. He started perfectly when the lights went out and took the lead of the race after a few metres. Unfortunately, an impatient rival attempted an attack on the second lap and went over the Birel ART, condemning him to retire.
Until now unobtrusive in the heats, Marijn Kremers made an interesting comeback in the Final which gave the team the consolation of a top five with the third fastest time for the last European KZ race of the season.
Upward trajectory for Longhi
Riccardo Longhi arrived in Sarno in 5th place in the European KZ2 Championship after his podium finish in Germany. However the Neapolitan competition did not go well during Qualifying. He was among the fastest in Practice, but only finished 7th in his session and 21st overall. A big challenge was presented to him in the Qualifying Heats. Riccardo repeatedly regained between four and six places in each heat, thanks to the competitiveness of his Birel ART / TM Racing which allowed him to set three fastest laps. This beautiful recovery of 15 places was worth it to start from the third row of the Final starting grid. Despite all his efforts, it was not enough to win the title. In a last, hotly contested race, he returned to 4th place with the third fastest time.
The performance level of the team was confirmed by the gain of 17 places in the Final for Leonardo Marseglia who finished in front of the very consistent Pierre Loubère. Starting from a distance in the Qualifying Heats, Andreas Dahlberg had three great runs but could not qualify for the Final because of a double retirement.
The Birel ART Racing Team is now preparing for the next European OK and OK-Junior meeting at Le Mans before thinking of the two world events in September in Finland and at Lonato in Italy.
Sarno: Birel ART al top della performance
I Birel ART del reparto corse ufficiale dell’azienda di Lissone hanno fortemente impressionato per le loro performance di primo piano sul circuito di Sarno in occasione della seconda prova del Campionato europeo. Alessandro Irlando nella KZ e Riccardo Longhi nella KZ2 si sono posizionati
come seri favoriti della doppia corsa al titolo. Purtroppo, un incidente ha eliminato Irlando nel momento in cui iniziava la sua ultima corsa verso il titolo europeo, mentre Longhi, autore di una formidabile rimonta, ha mancato di poco la consacrazione nel confronto finale.
“Così sono le gare. Tutti sappiamo che sono dure e a volte ingiuste, ma è la passione che condividiamo tutti con Birel ART dal giorno della sua nascita 60 anni fa”, ha dichiarato Luca Filini, manager del Racing Team. “La sera di Sarno, proviamo emozioni contrastanti. Certo, non abbiamo ancora raggiunto l’obiettivo della vittoria, ed è sempre spiacevole. Ma siamo stati molto performanti e ciò ci spinge a proseguire ogni giorno il nostro lavoro con sempre maggiore motivazione. L’obiettivo adesso è fare di tutto per distinguerci nel Campionato mondiale.”
È vero che tra i vari motivi di soddisfazione di Birel ART la sua presenza ai vertici europei delle categorie con cambio è particolarmente soddisfacente. Nella categoria KZ, che raggruppa i migliori piloti al mondo della disciplina, l’ascesa di Alessandro Irlando da inizio stagione è stata notevole.
Irlando vicino all’obiettivo
Autore del secondo tempo, ha continuato a migliorare terminando il suo percorso nelle manche con una vittoria e due giri veloci in gara. Ben saldo in prima fila sulla linea di partenza della finale, Alessandro aveva un vantaggio innegabile precedendo i suoi principali rivali per la conquista del titolo. È partito perfettamente allo spegnersi del semaforo e ha conquistato la testa della gara dopo alcuni metri. Sfortunatamente, un avversario impaziente ha tentato un attacco sin dal secondo giro ed è salito sul Birel ART costringendolo al ritiro.
Dopo una performance discreta nelle manche, Marijn Kremers ha realizzato una rimonta interessante in finale che ha dato al team la consolazione di una Top-5 accompagnata da un terzo miglior tempo per l’ultimo confronto europeo KZ della stagione.
Percorso ascendente per Longhi
Riccardo Longhi è arrivato a Sarno al quinto posto del Campionato europeo KZ2 dopo il suo podio in Germania. Tuttavia, la competizione napoletana è iniziata male sin dalle prove cronometrate. Tra i più veloci nelle prove, è riuscito a conquistare solo il settimo tempo della sua serie posizionandosi al 21° posto in classifica generale. Nelle manche di qualificazione ha dovuto affrontare una bella sfida. Riccardo ha inanellato una serie di exploit che gli hanno fatto recuperare 4/6 posizioni a ogni manche, grazie alla competitività del suo Birel ART/TM Racing che gli ha permesso di segnare anche tre giri veloci in gara. Questa bella rimonta di 15 posizioni gli è valsa la terza fila della griglia di partenza della finale. Nonostante tutti gli sforzi, questo non è stato sufficiente per la conquista del titolo. Durante l’ultima gara molto combattuta, ha guadagnato ancora posizioni fino a raggiungere la quarta con il terzo miglior tempo.
Il livello di performance del team è stato confermato dalla rimonta di diciassette posizioni in finale da parte di Leonardo Marseglia che ha concluso davanti Pierre Loubère, uno dei piloti più costanti. Partito lontano nelle prove cronometrate, Andreas Dahlberg è riuscito a fare tre belle manche, senza però qualificarsi per la finale a causa di un doppio ritiro.
Il team Birel ART Racing si prepara ora per il prossimo appuntamento europeo nella OK e OK-Junior a Le Mans per poi pensare ai due appuntamenti mondiali di settembre in Finlandia e poi in Italia, a Lonato.
Birel ART au top de la performance à Sarno
Les Birel ART du service course officiel de l’usine de Lissone a fortement impressionné par leurs performances de tout premier plan sur le circuit de Sarno à l’occasion de la 2e épreuve du Championnat d’Europe. Alessandro Irlando en KZ et Riccardo Longhi en KZ2 se sont positionnés
comme des favoris sérieux de la double course au titre. Un incident éliminait malheureusement Irlando au moment où il entamait son dernier run vers la couronne européenne, tandis que Longhi, auteur d’une formidable remontée, manquait de peu la consécration dans l’affrontement final.
« C’est la course, nous savons tous que c’est dur et quelquefois injuste, mais c’est la passion que nous partageons tous avec Birel ART depuis sa création il y a 60 ans », déclarait Luca Filini, le manager du Racing Team. « Au soir de Sarno, nous ressentons un sentiment mitigé. Bien sûr, nous n’avons pas encore atteint notre objectif de victoire, et c’est toujours contrariant. Mais nous étions vraiment très performants et cela nous pousse à poursuivre chaque jour notre travail avec davantage de motivation. Le but est maintenant de tout faire pour briller lors du Championnat du Monde. »
Il est vrai que parmi les multiples raisons de satisfaction de Birel ART, sa présence sur les sommets européens des catégories à boîte de vitesses est particulièrement réjouissante. Dans la catégorie KZ qui regroupe les meilleurs ténors mondiaux de la discipline, la montée en puissance d’Alessandro Irlando depuis le début de saison a été remarquée.
Irlando, si près du but
Auteur du 2e chrono, n’a cessé d’améliorer en terminant par son parcours dans les manches par une victoire et deux meilleurs tours en course. Bien installé sur la première ligne de la ligne de départ de la finale, Alessandro possédait un avantage indéniable en devançant ses principaux rivaux pour la conquête du titre. Il s’élançait parfaitement à l’extinction des feux et prenait la tête de la course après quelques mètres. Malheureusement, un adversaire impatient tentait une attaque dès le deuxième tour et montait sur le Birel ART, le condamnant à l’abandon.
Jusque-là discret dans les manches, Marijn Kremers effectuait un retour intéressant en finale qui apportait à l’équipe la consolation d’un top 5 assorti du 3e meilleur temps pour la dernière confrontation européenne KZ de la saison.
Parcours ascendant pour Longhi
Riccardo Longhi arrivait à Sarno au 5e rang du Championnat d’Europe KZ2 après son podium en Allemagne. Pourtant la compétition napolitaine s’engageait mal lors des chronos. Pointé parmi les plus rapides des essais, il ne réussissait que le 7e temps de sa série et pointait 21e au classement général. Un sacré challenge se présentait à lui dans les manches qualificatives. Riccardo enchaînait les coups d’éclat en regagnant entre 4 et 6 places à chaque manche, grâce à la compétitivité de son Birel ART / TM Racing qui lui permettaient de signer notamment trois meilleurs tours en course. Cette belle remontée de 15 places lui valait de s’élancer depuis la 3e ligne de la grille de départ finale. Malgré tous ses efforts, cela ne fut pas suffisant pour décrocher le titre. Lors d’une dernière course très disputée, il regagnait encore pour atteindre la 4e position avec le 3e meilleur temps.
Le niveau de performance de l’équipe était confirmé par la remontée de 17 places en finale à mettre au crédit de Leonardo Marseglia qui terminait devant le très régulier Pierre Loubère. Parti de loin lors des chronos, Andreas Dahlberg réussissait trois belles manches, mais ne parvenait à se qualifier pour la finale à cause d’un double abandon.
Le Birel ART Racing Team se prépare maintenant pour prochain rendez-vous européen OK et OK-Junior au Mans avant de penser aux deux rendez-vous mondiaux du mois de septembre en Finlande, puis en Italie, à Lonato.
