At a major race, the Sports Director plays a pivotal role in defining the race strategy. Working closely with the riders during the event, he needs a mobile office that offers him optimum working conditions during the race. Here is our profile of #julienjurdie and his Citroën C5 Aircross.
Julien is one of the three Sports Directors for the #ag2rcitroenteam. In order to lead his team to victory, his role is to prepare the path for each rider, identify opportunities that might work in their favour and ultimately help them to win the race. Based on the stage map, Julien draws up a strategy for the team and stays in permanent contact with the riders so that they can adapt to race conditions in real time, informs them about how the stage is going and warns them about any hazards through the headset.
“The sport of cycling is one of endurance. For 4 to 6 hours, I sit in a car that is really also an office,” Julien comments. Agile, comfortable, Citroën C5 Aircross is his essential partner that helps him to get his work done as efficiently as possible. Being a mobile office fitted with all the equipment that he needs to monitor the race, the Sports Director’s car has to be able to manoeuvre easily through winding roads and slip between the other cars in the race, all the while respecting the cyclists and spectators. The driving of the vehicle of the Sports Director needs to be extremely smooth and precise. The driver must stay alert and be calm and composed at all times, without exception. If one of the riders is in trouble, he needs to be able to step in and get to them as quickly as possible.
For #julienjurdie, this job is above all a passion. Since always, he has been fascinated by the Tour de France and, this year again, he will encourage his riders to give it their best. “That’s when you need to be good at what you do, stay strong, find the right words for the riders. It’s also when you see the team’s true values. And Citroën gives us everything we need to perform at the top of our game and support our riders all the way through to victory,” he added. In his opinion, the notion of the collective is essential; the whole team needs to be one with the riders, and the same goes for the Citroën fleet that ensures their mobility during the race.
As the title co-sponsor of the #ag2rcitroenteam, Citroën has provided them with a fleet of 26 vehicles, including 11 plug-in hybrid vehicles (6x Blue Tech SpaceTourers, 9x Blue Tech C5 Aircross and 11x C5 Aircross Hybrid PHEVs).
