Turisme de Barcelona has signed up to the Marviva project to clean up, collect and classify the marine rubbish on the city’s shoreline.
The scheme is currently being developed as a pilot-project in the Port of Barcelona and has the Barcelona Fishermen’s Guild as the body in charge of performing the task of collecting the waste from the sea bed and transporting it to the port. Once on dry land, the rubbish is weighed, measured, photographed and classified so it can be processed appropriately.
Within the area of corporate social responsibility, Turisme de Barcelona is implementing a series of measures to enable it to realise its commitments in the overall area of sustainability. In this regard, the promotion consortium supports the Barcelona Fishermen’s Guild, the Port of Barcelona and the Waste Agency of Catalonia in the task of raising awareness of the conservation of Barcelona’s coast-line because of its benefits for the marine ecosystem and for the economic activity of fishing, as well as for tourism and the health and safety of bathers. There are plans to repeat the Marviva programme in Catalonia’s other fishing ports.
The Barcelona Fishermen’s Guild is a member of Turisme de Barcelona’s Barcelona Mar (Barcelona Sea) programme, created with some twenty members. The leisure activities that are available through the Barcelona Tickets on-line information platform include the Fishermen of the Barceloneta service, a guided visit to the fishermen’s dock with a trip to the fish market and a seafood tasting menu.
