The number of e-commerce users has soared all over the world to the point that any commercial strategy must include these on-line purchasers. In China there are now 271 million users, followed by the United States (156 million), Japan (75.6 million) and Germany (43.3 million). E-commerce (15.4 million users) is growing in Spain at a year-on-year rate of 26%. Mobile phones are now used to make 52.2% of transactions.
These data were presented during the meeting of the Barcelona Shopping Line – Shopping City programme, held on 10th May in the auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA). Another point that also stood out was the importance of commerce in driving the tourist industry and as a catalyst for spending by visitors.
The Barcelona Shopping Line programme carried out a campaign from 6th to 22nd May directed at Barcelona’s visitors and citizens to invigorate its commerce, coinciding with three Sundays with open shops. Three specially adapted lorries located at strategic points distributed guides, discount cards, maps and a bag specially made for the campaign, that included banners and adverts in the newspapers La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya.
The Barcelona Premium programme also celebrated its meeting on 24th May in the auditorium of the Museum of History of Catalonia, where the new requirements of clients with high purchasing power were analysed, in particular the case of Chinese premium travellers.
