The second stage of the Pharaons Rally didn’t see any significant changes in the motorcycle category. Even if the day’s special stage was increasingly difficult as it wore on, both in terms of terrain and navigation, the top riders all took it in stride. Amongst the cars, the gap between Khalifa Al-Mutawei and Jean-Louis Schlesser was reduced notably, thanks to a fairly dominant win by the Frenchman.
Jordi Viladoms (KTM – Bordone Ferrari) ran a nearly perfect stage today. We say nearly because the Catalan rider started very strong in the first part, before losing a little concentration later on. As he explained in his usual calm and direct way: “The second part of the stage was faster than the first. I left the refueling point with a thirty-second lead on the others, but Barreda and Goncalves were able to catch me. I was impressed by their speed, as their bikes were going at least 10 km/h faster than mine. That distracted me a little bit.†That said, Jordi still won the 307 km stage with an advantage of 1’12” over Jakub Przygonsky (KTM – Orlen team), another rider who was fast in the first half of the stage, “but they lost me towards the end,†the Polish rider explained.
One reason why Joan Barreda finished fourth, behind Goncalves, is because they wandered off course toward the finish of the stage, where Viladoms was instead impeccable. Pal Anders Ullevalseter had a good day, finishing fifth, the same position he occupies in the overall standings, ahead of Bolivian rider Juan Carlos Salvatierra.
Diocleziano Toia maintained his lead among the Italian contingent, tenth on the stage and ninth overall.
Among the quads, Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec won the stage ahead of his compatriot Rafal Sonik, moving up to the head of the overall standings. Camelia Liparoti, the only woman racing a quad or bike, ran another courageous stage today, taking third place on her Yamaha Raptor.
Auto: Schlesser applies pressure
Of the 21 minutes that separated Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 X-Raid) from Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Sonangol), only 5’40’’ now remain. The driver from the Emirates lost his first pursuer, Régis Delahaye, but another one took his place… Patrick Sireyjol marked him close for the entire stage, setting the second fastest time in the process, and moving up to third place overall. “It was a trouble free day,†the driver of the SMG Buggy said, with a very telling smile on his face. Boris Gadasin continued his strong run with a fourth place finish for the stage, following yesterday’s retirement of his Team G-Force teammate, Vladimir Vasilyev, because of an engine problem.
There was also tough news for Team Sixt Ukraine: a broken gearbox on his Toyota LC 200 prevented Vadym Nesterchuk and Laurent Lichtleuchter from continuing their race.
With the second stage now complete, the suspense is greater than ever amongst the cars. The class of Jean-Louis Schlesser’s driving is indisputable, and what he did today behind the wheel of his two wheel drive buggy is only the latest demonstration of that fact: the Frenchman finished his charge with a 9’44” lead over Sireyjol, and an impressive 16’07” on Al-Mutaiwei.
Team Dessoude came to the fore today with the Italian crew of Michele Cinotto and Fulvio Zini, finishing fifth. Also worth noting was the performance of Japanese driver Jun Mitsuhashi, navigated by Frenchman Alain Guehennec, seventh ahead of Nicolas Gibon-Akira Miura, both at the wheel of Toyota VDJ200’s for Team Land Cruiser Auto Body.
Tomorrow is the third stage of the 2012 Pharaons: from Tibniya to Abu Mingar, with a daunting 426 km special stage and 159 km transfer. It’s the longest stage of this year’s rally.
Viladoms et Schlesser in vetta!
La seconda tappa del Pharaons Rally non ha apportato grossi cambiamenti nella categoria moto. Anche se il percorso odierno ha presentato difficoltà crescenti, sia dal punto di vista dei terreni che della navigazione, i piloti di punta non si sono fatti sorprendere. Tra le auto lo scarto tra Khalifa Al-Mutawei et Jean-Louis Schlesser si riduce sensibilmente, con una vittoria senza appello del francese.
Jordi Viladoms (KTM – Bordone Ferrari) ha condotto oggi una tappa quasi perfetta. Quasi perché il catalano è partito forte nella prima parte, prima di perdere un po’ di concentrazione. Spiega con la sua consueta tranquillità : La seconda parte era più veloce della prima. Sono ripartito dal rifornimento con una trentina di secondi di vantaggio sugli inseguitori. Barreda e Goncalves mi hanno poi ripreso e sono rimasto impressionato dalla loro velocità , le loro moto andavano almeno 10 chilometri all’ora più della mia. Questo mi ha un po’ deconcentrato.» Jordi ha comunque vinto la tappa di 307 chilometri con 1’12” di vantaggio su Jakub Przygonsky (KTM – Orlen team), anch’egli molto veloce nel primo settore: «Ma verso la fine mi sono perso» ha spiegato il polacco.
Se Joan Barreda è terminato quarto dietro Goncalves, è perchè entrambi i piloti Husqvarna hanno perso la strada verso la conclusione della tappa, dove invece Viladoms è stato impeccabile. Pal Anders Ullevalseter ha condotto una buona tappa, terminando quinto, stessa posizione che occupa in generale, davanti al boliviano Juan Carlos Salvatierra.
Diocleziano Toia conserva la testa della «pattuglia» italiana, decimo di tappa e nono in generale.
Tra i quad il polacco Lukasz Laskawiec ha vinto la tappa davanti al suo compatriota Rafal Sonik e si è installato in cima alla classifica generale. Camelia Liparoti, unica donna in gara tra moto e quad, è anche oggi autrice di una prova coraggiosa ottenendo il terzo posto di categoria sul suo grosso Yamaha Raptor.
Auto: forcing di Schlesser
Dei 21 minuti che separavano Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 X-Raid) da Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Sonangol), rimangono ora solo 5’40”.
Il pilota degli Emirati ha perso il suo primo inseguitore, Régis Delahaye, ma un’altro francese ha preso il suo posto… Patrick Sireyjol lo ha «punzecchiato» per tutta la tappa fino ad ottenere il secondo crono di giornata, conservando la terza posizione in generale. «Una giornata senza problemi» ha affermato il pilota del Buggy SMG, con un sorriso molto eloquente.
Boris Gadasin prosegue la sua cavalcata con il quarto posto di tappa, dopo il ritiro di ieri del suo compagno nel Team G-Force, Vladimir Vasilyev per un problema al motore.
Duro colpo anche per il team Sixt Ukraine: la rottura del cambio della Toyota LC 200 ha impedito a Vadym Nesterchuk e Laurent Lichtleuchter di proseguire la corsa.
Al termine di questa seconda tappa, la suspance è alle stelle nella gara delle auto. La classe di Jean-Louis Schlesser è indiscussa e quello che ha fatto oggi al volante del suo buggy a due ruote motrici è solo l’ennesima dimostrazione : il francese ha terminato la sua cavalcata con 9’44” di vantaggio su Sireyjol e ben 16’07” su Al-Mutaiwei.

Viladoms et Schlesser vainqueurs!
L’étape 2 du Rallyes des Pharaons n’a pas apporté de grands changements dans la catégorie moto. Même si, le parcours monte en difficultés, en franchissement et en navigation, les concurrents sur deux roues ne se sont pas laissés piéger dans le parcours. En autos, l’étau se resserre entre Khalifa Al-Mutawei et Jean-Louis Schlesser, auteur d’une victoire sans appel.
Jordi Viladoms (KTM – Bordone Ferrari) réalise un parcours ‘presque’ parfait. Presque car, l’espagnol est parti très fort sur la première partie avant de se déconcentrer. Il l’explique avec sa simplicité habituelle: «La seconde partie était plus rapide que la précédente. Je me suis élancé du ravitaillement avec une trentaine de secondes d’avance sur mes adversaires. Barreda et Goncalves (Husqvarna) me sont revenus dessus… j’ai été surpris de leur vitesse, au minimum plus rapide de 10 km/h par rapport à ma KTM. Ce qui m’a légèrement déconcentré.» Il remporte toutefois l’épreuve longue de 307 km avec 1mn 12 d’avance sur Jakub Przygonski (KTM – Orlen Team), aussi rapide dans le premier secteur: «mais sur la fin, je me suis perdu» explique le Polonais du bout des lèvres.
Si Joan Barreda termine 4ème derrière Goncalves, ils doivent leurs places à un peu de jardinage sur la fin du parcours, partie sur laquelle Jordi Viladoms n’a pas commis la moindre erreur. Pal Ullevalseter fait son bonhomme de chemin, 5ème de l’étape il occupe la même place au classement général devant Juan Carlos Salvatierra sur Honda.
Le Orlen Team rentre de nouveau dans le ‘top ten’, Jacek Czachor se classe 7ème devant son compatriote, Marek Dabrowski.
Toia Diocleziano conserve la tête de la famille italienne, 10ème de la spéciale il occupe la 9ème du général.
En Quad, le Polonais Lukasz Laskawiec remporte l’étape devant son compatriote Rafal Sonik et s’empare de la tête de la catégorie. Camélia Liparoti, seule féminine du plateau a fait preuve d’un grand courage pour terminer à la 3ème place au guidon de son gros Yamaha Raptor.
Autos: Schlesser fait le forcing!
Des 21 minutes qui séparaient Khalifa Al-Mutawei (Mini All4 X-Raid) à Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Sonangol), l’écart s’est considérablement réduit à 5mn 40s! Le pilote de Dubaï a perdu son premier chasseur Régis Delahaye mais un français peut en cacher un autre… Patrick Sireyjol, est venu le titiller durant cette étape au point de signer le deuxième chrono et de conserver la troisième place du général. «Une journée sans problème» a reconnu le pilote du Buggy SMG, une étape sous-pression pour le pilote de Dubaï et un large sourire en guise de satisfaction pour le concepteur-pilote.
Boris Gadasin poursuit sa chevauchée d’autant que son compatriote et équipier du Team G-Force, Vladimir Vasilyev a abandonné la veille, moteur en cause.
Coup dur également pour le Sixt Ukraine dont la boîte de vitesses du Toyota LC 200 s’est cassée privant Vadym Nesterchuk et Laurent Lichtleuchter de poursuivre leur course.
Au soir de cette étape 2, le suspense est total dans la course auto. Les observateurs reconnaissent que Jean-Louis Schlesser a l’étoffe d’un vainqueur à l’analyse de cette folle journée où le Buggy 2 roues motrices a joué de la concurrence en terminant le sprint avec 9mn 44s d’avance sur Sireyjol et 16mn 07 sur Al-Mutawei.
Le Team Dessoude s’est mis en évidence dans cette étape. L’équipage italien équipé du Buggy Juke (moteur BMW préparé par Jean-Marc Schmit), avec dans l’habitacle, Michele Cinotto et Fulvio Zini terminent à la 5ème place.
Nouvelle mention pour le Japonais Jun Mitsuhashi et le français Alain Guehennec, 7ème devant le français Nicolas Gibon – Akira Miura, tous deux équipés d’un Toyota VDJ200 du Team Land Cruiser Auto Body.
Demain, étape 3: Tibnyia – Abu Mingar avec 426 km en secteur sélectif et, 159 km de liaisons (5 km puis 154 km).
