There will be a new work of art by Mirko Demattè, the spatial artist from Trentino, being held up to the sky in the main square in Krakow on Saturday, August 8th, by the winner of the 72nd Tour de Pologne UCI World Tour. This “cup” will be in addition to the traditional trophy from the Wieliczka salt mines that is given to the winners each year on the podium.
The artist from Trentino has produced a modern piece with a ceramic base and a body made in “woodn”, a completely recyclable, high tech material made from PVC and ecologic bamboo. Of course the colours chosen are the ones of the Polish national flag, red and white.
“Starting from the base we can see how the piece strives to represent a Poland that is picking itself up, that is growing and emerging to show Europe and the world the beauties of its territory, with its traditions and the customs and uses of its people. A Poland in which sport and cycling are an important component. This is where the idea of the road came from, which represents the Tour de Pologne itself, which comes out of Poland and aims for the sky, towards new, infinitive horizons, spurred by the competitive fervor of its riders and the passion of its fans and all the enthusiasts who experience this great event,” explains Mirko Demattè, who has received numerous accolades from art critics of the caliber like Vittorio Sgarbi and Giorgio Grasso.
“I have a special relationship with sport, and in particular with cycling; in 2009 one of my pieces was awarded to the pink jersey in the Giro d’Italia,” continues Mirko Demattè. “Between Poland and my land, Trentino, there is great synergy, this is why being present at an international event like the Tour de Pologne becomes a source of great pride and satisfaction. I have a special relationship with Poland; over the last year I have travelled extensively in this country, showing in several cities including Warsaw and Krakow. This has given me the opportunity to get to know Poland up close and on a deep level, along with its people, whom I am really appreciating a lot.”
“This trophy, which will be delivered to the hands of the winner of the 2015 Tour de Pologne, together with the trophy from the Wieliczka salt mine, is rich in significance and symbolic values, but overall it represents a further link in the profitable collaboration and deep friendship that has connected us to Trentino for six years,” explains General Director for the TdP Czeslaw Lang. “In 2013 the Tour de Pologne kicked off from Trentino; this year in June we experienced the Tour de Pologne Challenge Trentino, which for the first time brought many Polish enthusiasts to pedal in the magical scenery of the Dolomites. We can only be proud and satisfied of this partnership that continues to grow with ever new and exciting experiences.”

THE ARTIST
An extrovert personality capable of profound introspection, Mirko Demattè, originally from Pergine Valsugana (Trento), came to the world of art after an interior maturity developed though travels in the search of his own family roots. On his return from the United States, in the 1500’s villa that would become his artist studio, he came up with his first productions, which recall a lot of the vehemence of Action Painting.
Matter is the heart of Demattè’s artistic production; Pollock, Fontana and Burri are his main inspirations.
With touching nonchalance, the artist experiments with figurative spaces of various volumes and allegoric symbolism modeled in the chosen media, whether its paper, wood or metal.
Demattè imprints his own sensations in the materials: he often covers them in crude fabric which he brings to the forefront, anticipating the most marked phase of three-dimensionality; then he paints them with vivid colors that look varnished.
His works reflect the shapes of the soul; the viewer perceives the deep and linear sensibility that conceived them; each creation elicits warm enthusiasm.
