July has become the favourite month for tourists to visit European cities, taking over from August, the traditional summer holiday period.
A study by European Cities Marketing (ECM), which analyses trends in 74 European cities, shows that last year, 36.6 million overnight stays were registered in July, 600,000 more than in August of the same year.
This phenomenon did not occur in 2014 and so statistics reflect a change in the preferences of visitors to European cities when planning their summer holidays, with July becoming the most attractive month for urban tourism.
Urban tourism in Europe is also growing to a faster extent than tourism generally and the growth rate is higher than the recorded economic growth of all the OECD countries and Euro Zone, measured in terms of the Growth Domestic Product (GDP).
