Après un coup d’essai prometteur en Championnat d’Europe FIA Karting – Junior à Angerville, Maxime Furon-Castelain faisait ses débuts dans le Trophée Académie FIA Karting en Allemagne sur le circuit de Wackersdorf.
À l’occasion d’une compétition rendue difficile par des conditions climatiques erratiques, le jeune Luxembourgeois a prouvé une nouvelle fois son talent en remontant de la 31e à la 13e position lors de la journée du dimanche 5 mai 2019.
Si Maxime n’est pas le premier pilote à représenter le Luxembourg dans le Trophée Académie FIA Karting, c’est certainement le plus jeune à faire briller les couleurs du Grand Duché. À 11 ans, Maxime est également le plus jeune du plateau de 50 pilotes issus de 47 nations du monde entier qui se sont affrontés à armes égales sur des Exprit/Vortex/B’stone monotypes en Bavière.
Vendredi, après avoir pris ses marques lors des séances d’essais libres, Maxime s’élançait pour les chronos officiels sous le soleil. Il réalisait le 5e temps de sa série et prenait la 13e place au classement général, une performance stimulante face à des adversaires généralement beaucoup plus expérimentés. Encouragé samedi par la présence d’Henry Schwirtz, le responsable karting de la fédération luxembourgeoise, l’ACL Sport, Maxime partait de la 7e position pour sa première manche qualificative. Équipés de pneus slicks, les karts se retrouvaient en difficulté avec l’apparition de la pluie dès le tour de formation. Alors que les sorties de piste se multipliaient, Maxime gardait son sang-froid sous le déluge. Il effectuait un passage hors-piste, mais contrôlait son kart pour ne pas perdre trop de temps et remontait ensuite jusqu’à la 6e position alors que plus de la moitié des pilotes avaient abandonné. La seconde manche se déroulait encore sous la pluie, mais cette fois avec des pneus adaptés. Bien parti, Maxime était heurté par le pilote qui le suivait et propulsé sur deux concurrents en perdition dès le premier tour : c’était l’abandon.
Maxime pointait au 31e rang après cette journée compliquée durant laquelle il n’avait pourtant pas démérité. Il abordait le dimanche très concentré sur son objectif et affichait un rythme élevé dans la dernière manche. Sa 6e place lui permettait de se qualifier 21e parmi les 34 finalistes. Prudent au départ de la finale qui avait lieu sur une piste sèche, Maxime évitait ainsi les incidents du premier tour et se lançait à l’attaque de ses adversaires en enchaînant de superbes temps. Il revenait ainsi près du top 10, puis perdait du terrain dans le dernier tour en ne contrôlant pas suffisamment ses poursuivants. Maxime se classait à une excellente 13e position, totalisant une progression de 18 places durant la journée.
« Ce fut un week-end difficile, mais très instructif », commentait Maxime. « Je prévoyais avant tout de faire partie des finalistes et cet objectif a été largement dépassé malgré mon abandon de la 2e manche. Je suis très content d’avoir su maîtriser mon Exprit/Vortex dans cette nouvelle catégorie où je suis encore le plus jeune : j’ai l’habitude de cette situation depuis mes débuts ! Parvenir à revenir de la 31e à la 13e place en une seule journée m’a procuré une grande satisfaction, d’autant que j’ai beaucoup appris avec mon mécanicien Ulysse De Pauw. Merci également à Éric Verdaasdonk pour son soutien et ses conseils pendant tout ce week-end, à l’ACL Sport et à la FIA Karting pour m’avoir permis de participer au Trophée Académie. »
Maxime va maintenant retrouver le volant de son Kosmic/Iame pour la 2e épreuve du Championnat d’Europe Junior dans une semaine à Genk tandis que le 2e meeting du Trophée Académie aura lieu à Sarno du 14 au 16 juin.
Maxime Furon-Castelain hoists the colours of Luxembourg high in the Academy Trophy
After a promising test drive in the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior at Angerville, Maxime Furon-Castelain made his debut in the FIA Karting Academy Trophy in Germany at the Wackersdorf circuit. During a competition made difficult by the erratic weather conditions, the young Luxembourger proved his talent once again by moving up from 31st to 13th position on Sunday, 5th May, 2019.
Although Maxime is not the first driver to represent Luxembourg in the FIA Karting Academy Trophy, he is certainly the youngest to wear the colours of the Grand Duchy. At the age of 11, Maxime is also the youngest of the field of 50 drivers from 47 nations around the world who competed on equal terms in Bavaria on identical Exprit / Vortex / B’stone karts.
On Friday, having made his mark during the Free Practice sessions, Maxime pushed in Qualifying in the sun. He achieved the 5th fastest time of his group and took 13th place in the general classification, an inspiring performance against opponents who were generally much more experienced. Encouraged on Saturday by the presence of Henry Schwirtz, head of karting of the Luxembourg federation, the ACL Sport, Maxime started in 7th position for his first Qualifying Heat. Equipped with slick tyres, the karts found themselves in difficulty when rain started on the formation lap. As the accidents multiplied, Maxime kept his cool under the deluge. He went off-track, but controlled his kart so as not to lose too much time and then came back to 6th position when more than half of the drivers had retired. The second heat was still in the rain, but this time with wet tyres. Starting well, Maxime was hit by the driver behind him and hit two competitors in distress on the first lap, leading to retirement.
Maxime was in 31st place after this complicated day during which he had not made a mistake. He started Sunday with intense focus and the objective of a good place in the Final. His 6th place allowed him to qualify 21st among the 34 finalists. Careful at the start of the Final which was held on a dry track, Maxime avoided the incidents of the first lap and launched to attack his opponents chaining great time. He came back close to the top 10, but was losing ground on the last lap due to not controlling his pursuers enough. Maxime finished in an excellent 13th position, totalling 18 places gained during the day.
“It was a difficult week-end, but very informative,” commented Maxime. “I planned to be among the finalists first of all and this goal was largely exceeded despite my retirement from the second heat. I am very happy to have mastered my Exprit / Vortex in this new category where I am still the youngest: I have got used this situation since my debut! Coming back from 31st to 13th place in one day gave me much satisfaction, especially as I learned a lot with my mechanic Ulysse De Pauw. Thanks also to Eric Verdaasdonk for his support and advice throughout the weekend, and ACL Sport and FIA Karting for allowing me to participate in the Academy Trophy.”
Maxime will now return to the wheel of his Kosmic / Iame for the second round of the European Junior Championship in a week at Genk, while the second meeting of the Academy Trophy will take place at Sarno from 14th to 16th June.
